Pavement Crack Detection Using Unmanned Air Vehicles

2016-01-10
Pavement condition assessment is an essential piece of modern pavement management systems as rehabilitation strategies are planned based upon its outcomes. For proper evaluation of existing pavements, they must be continuously and effectively monitored using practical means. Conventionally, truck-based pavement monitoring systems have been in-use in assessing the remaining life of in-service pavements. Although such systems produce accurate results, their use can be expensive and data processing can be time consuming, which make them infeasible considering the demand for quick pavement evaluation. To overcome such problems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be used as an alternative as they are relatively cheaper and easier-to-use. In this study, we propose a UAV based pavement crack identification system for monitoring rigid pavements’ existing conditions. The system consists of recently introduced image processing algorithms used together with conventional machine learning techniques, both of which are used to perform detection of cracks on rigid pavements’ surface and their classification. Through image processing, the distinct features of labelled crack bodies are first obtained from the UAV based images and then used for training of a Support Vector Machine (SVM) model. The performance of the developed SVM model was assessed with a field study performed along a rigid pavement exposed to low traffic and serious temperature changes. Available cracks were classified using the UAV based system and obtained results indicate it ensures a good alternative solution for pavement monitoring applications.

DOGAN, ONUR; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı (2018-10-04)
Labor intensive and hazardous nature of the construction activities plays an important role on the increase of the amount of accidents and fatalities on sites. One of the most important sources of fatalities occurring on construction sites is falls-from-height (FFH). Despite the various efforts for the solution over decades, the yearly statistics still indicate high amount of fatalities and severe injuries due to FFH accidents on construction sites. Medical literature emphasize that the time passed after th...

Traffic accidents cause damages in social, economic and health of communities, which have severe and serious costs in the long run. Infrastructural elements are also crucial, which can be avoided beginning from planning stages. Road Safety Audit (RSA) is a concept that lists and checks various design and operational characteristics of road projects and segments, to either prevent accidents and/or reduce their severity, implemented in many countries. However, lack of RSA legislation in Turkey is a major prob...

The disclosure relates to asphalt foam collapse test methods and related apparatus for the measurement and determination of foamed asphalt binder quality, in particular warm-mix asphalt. Various asphalt binder/foam quality indicators can be measured according to the disclosure, such as bubble size distribution, bubble surface area, foam expansion ratio, foam half-life, foam index, as well as normalized parameters related to the same. The disclosed methods and apparatus permit the repeatable characterization...

The use of concrete instead of traditional asphalt in road construction has been a challenge in the last century for road owners looking for a safe and sustainable solution. Very heavy expenditures of asphalt pavement rehabilitation during its lifetime, have made concrete the best choice for substitution. However, it is generally accepted that the initial construction costs of conventional concrete pavements are high. In concrete pavement construction, a competitive method for decreasing initial cost of con...
