FOOD WEB STRUCTURE IN THE AEGEAN SEA AND THE TURKISH STRAITS SYSTEM AND UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF THE OCEAN ACIDIFICATION AS IMPORTANT DRIVER OF CHANGE IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS
Zervoudaki, S; Orek, Hasan; Krasakopoulou, E; Assimakopoulou, G.; Fach Salihoğlu, Bettina Andrea; Papathanassiou, E. (2014-01-01)
During the SESAME project a study was undertaken in the northern Aegean Sea and simultaneously in the Turkish Straits System (TSS). The composition and the structure of the pelagic food web were examined in order to understand the transfer of phytoplankton production up the food chain in TSS and the Aegean Sea. The results of this study confirm our hypothesis that there is a substantial differentiation within pelagic food web structure and carbon flow from Bosphorus to the Aegean Sea. Ocean acidification ha...
Food web effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in an outdoor freshwater mesocosm experiment
Jovanovic, Boris; Bezirci, Gizem; Cagan, Ali Serhan; Coppens, Jan; Levi, Eti E.; Oluz, Zehra; Tuncel, Eylul; DURAN, HATİCE; Beklioğlu, Meryem (2016-01-01)
Over the course of 78days, nine outdoor mesocosms, each with 1350L capacity, were situated on a pontoon platform in the middle of a lake and exposed to 0gL(-1) TiO2, 25gL(-1) TiO2 or 250gL(-1) TiO2 nanoparticles in the form of E171 TiO2 human food additive five times a week. Mesocosms were inoculated with sediment, phytoplankton, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and fish before exposure, ensuring a complete food web. Physicochemical parameters of the water, nutrient concentrations, and biomass o...

Food spoilage monitoring using carbon nanodots and uv irradiation reinforced colorimetric fish gelatin films
Kılıç, Münevver Beyza; Kahyaoğlu, Leyla Nesrin; Şümnü, Servet Gülüm; Department of Food Engineering (2022-9)
Foodborne diseases can lead to serious health and economic losses. Therefore, research priority has been given to the efforts to ensure food safety in recent years. Within this framework, effective and user-friendly smart packaging technologies need to be developed and integrated into food packaging applications. The proposed project aims to develop a biocompatible colorimetric film that can be integrated into food packaging where the consumer can easily obtain a real-time freshness assessment of food. Fish...
