In this study, vibration characteristics of a smart beam are investigated by using piezoelectric patches as sensors. Smart beam is excited by either impact hammer or piezoelectric patch and the frequency response of the system to these excitations are obtained from a piezoelectric patch used as sensor. The effect of the location of the piezoelectric sensor on frequency response of the system is also presented by choosing different piezoelectric patches along the smart beam. In order to investigate the performance of the piezoelectric patch in sensing, all results are then compared to those obtained from theory, single-axis accelerometer and laser displacement sensor.
