Pre-event dam failure analyses for emergency management

Simultaneous dam-break analyses of two dams, namely the Nilüfer and Doǧanci dams, due to a breach in their bodies, were performed under various hydraulic conditions. Both of the dams are located in the same river branch of the Nilufer Basin in the province of Bursa in Turkey. The main purpose of the study was to see the negative effects of such failure on the city of Bursa, which is located downstream of the dams, as well as to make available the results of the study to the relevant public officials for their use in a real-time emergency management. The numerical model used in the study is called DAMBRK. This model is very comprehensive and was developed at the National Weather Service (NWS) in the United States and is used widely in other countries. The results of the multiple-dam failure analyses performed in different scenarios indicate that some parts of downstream region near Bursa may be affected adversely. It appears that it would be appropriate for the public officials who are in charge of public safety to prepare emergency action plans (EAP) in advance to manage effectively such an undesirable event, in case it occurs.

Numerical analyses of load tests on model foundations in dry sand
Unsever, Y. S.; Matsumoto, T.; Özkan, M. Yener (2015-01-01)
In this study, a series of vertical and cyclic horizontal load tests on 3-pile piled raft model were carried out in dry sand to investigate the piled raft behaviour under combined loads. Also, numerical modelling of experiments were carried out by using FEM software, PLAXIS 3D. Hardening soil model was employed to model the sand, and elastic model was used for the pile and the raft. Soil parameters were estimated from consolidated drained triaxial tests carried on the sand samples and pile parameters were e...
Experimental Investigation of Flood Management by an Instantaneous Levee Breach
Al-Hafidh, Ibrahim Adil Ibrahim; Çalamak, Melih; Larocque, Lindsey Ann; Chaudhry, M. Hanif; Imran, Jasim (2022-02-01)
Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the reduction of flood depth in a channel due to an engineered levee breach. Different combinations of inflow hydrographs, breach openings, and floodplain storage areas were considered. Inflow hydrographs with various peak discharges, hydrograph shapes, and flood durations were generated by a computer-controlled valve. A breach was created instantaneously on the channel sidewall as the flood wave approached the breach location. Regression analyses were co...
Seismic Performance Evaluation of Concrete Gravity Dams by Using Pseudo Dynamic Testing and Simulations
Aldemir, Alper; Binici, Barış (null; 2017-11-24)
Dams are one of the mostimportantinfrastructure components servingfor water storage and energyproduction.Experimental studies on the seismic response of concrete gravity dams are scarce due to the complications regarding thelargescaleof dams and their interaction with the reservoir. This study presents the results of recent novel pseudo-dynamic dam tests (PSD) along with the nonlinear finite element simulations of the specimens. The test specimens were 1/75 scaled version of the highest ...
Experimental Investigation of Flow Conditions over Cambasi Dam Spillway
Altan Sakarya, Ayşe Burcu; Aydın, İsmail; Göğüş, Mustafa; Köken, Mete (2013-09-13)
The entrance conditions, flow around the piers and the pressure distributions along the centerline and the side of the spillway channel for different discharges were investigated for Cambasi dam that will be constructed at the intersection of Kabali and Hamzabey rivers in Ordu District. Hydraulic model of the spillway was constructed at a length scale of 1/20, based on the Froude similarity. Additionally, the water depths and the velocities through the channel sections at different locations were investigat...
Possible worst-case tsunami scenarios around the Marmara Sea from combined earthquake and landslide sources
Latcharote, Panon; Suppasri, Anawat; Imamura, Fumihiko; Aytore, Betul; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (2016-12-01)
This study evaluates tsunami hazards in the Marmara Sea from possible worst-case tsunami scenarios that are from submarine earthquakes and landslides. In terms of fault-generated tsunamis, seismic ruptures can propagate along the North Anatolian Fault (NAF), which has produced historical tsunamis in the Marmara Sea. Based on the past studies, which consider fault-generated tsunamis and landslide-generated tsunamis individually, future scenarios are expected to generate tsunamis, and submarine landslides cou...
