The Effects of Gender Cognitive Development and Socioeconomic Status on Physics Achievement

1999-01-01
The study described in this paper attempted to investigate the combined and individual effects af certain variables (gender, cognitive development and socioeconomic status (SES» an physics achievement. We used a physics achievement test, logical thinking ability test and a socioeconomic status questiannaire to assess 35 high school second grade students' physics achievement, cognitive level and socioeconomic level. We used Multiple Regression and Correlatian Analysis (MRC) for analyzing data abtained from those tests. The analysis af data revealed that male students generally got higher scores in physics than female students. The cognitive level af students did not affect their score on achievement test. Socioeconomic level af the students shawed significant effect an their physics achievement.

The present study aims to investigate theeffect of gender difference and reasoning ability on thelearning of human circulatory system concepts. Group Assessment of Logical Thinking and the Human CirculatorySystem Concepts Test were administeredto 47 tenth gradestudents to determine their reasoning ability and achievement, respectively. Two-way ANOVA was used toanalyze the data. The results revealed that while gender difference did not affect the performance on the achievementtest, reasoning ability signific...
The role of gender, sense of coherence and physical activity in positive and negative affect
Öztekin, Ceyda; Tezer, Esin; Department of Educational Sciences (2008)
The present study investigated the role of gender, sense of coherence and total physical activity in positive and negative affect. The participants were 376 (169 female, 206 male, and 1 missing value) volunteered students from different faculties of Middle East Technical University. Three questionnaires, namely, Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC), Physical Activity Assessment Questionnaire (PAAQ), and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) were administered to the students together with the demographic i...
The effect of gender on different categories of students' misconceptions about force and motion
Temizkan, Derya; Eryılmaz, Ali; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2003)
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of gender on different categories of tenth grade students' misconceptions about force and motion. The Force Concept Inventory Test (FCI), Mechanics Baseline Test (MBT), Physics Attitude Scale (PAS) and Experience Questionnaire About Force and Motion (EQFM) were developed by the researcher to assess students' misconceptions, achievement, attitudes, and experiences, respectively. There were nine dependent (students' total scores on the FCI and thei...
The effect of instruction with analogy-enhanced model on ninth grade students' function achievement and attitudes toward mathematics
Akman, Caner; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2005)
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of analogy-enhanced instruction on students̕ achievement in function and attitudes toward mathematics. The study was conducted with 63 ninth grade students in one of the public high schools in Konya, Turkey during Spring 2005 semester. The experimental group received instruction with analogy-enhanced model. The control group received instruction with traditional method. The matching-only pre-test- post-test control group design was used in the study. The fo...
