A maximum likelihood framework for probabilistic assessment of post cyclic deformations is described. A database, consisting of cyclic laboratory test results including maximum shear strains in conjunction with relative density, number of stress (strain) cycles and "index" test results is used for the development of probabilistically-based post cyclic deformation correlations. For this purpose series of stress controlled cyclic triaxial tests were performed on laboratory constituted clean sand specimens consolidated isotropically to a confining pressure of 100 kPa. The proposed stochastic method allows full and consistent representation of uncertainties, including model imperfection and statistical uncertainty. Volumetric and shear strain boundary curves are developed for the assessment of post cyclic deformation problem. The resulting correlations represent a significant improvement over prior efforts, producing predictive relationships with enhanced accuracy and greatly reduced overall model uncertainty.

Probabilistic assessment of liquefaction-induced lateral ground deformations
Al Bawwab, Wa'el Mohammad Kh; Çetin, Kemal Önder; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
A new reliability-based probabilistic model is developed for the estimation of liquefaction-induced lateral ground spreading, taking into consideration the uncertainties within the model functional form and the descriptive variables as well. The new model is also introduced as performance-based probabilistic engineering tool.
A new time-domain boundary element formulation for generalized models of viscoelasticity
Akay, Ahmet Arda; Gürses, Ercan; Göktepe, Serdar (2023-05-01)
The contribution is concerned with the novel algorithmic formulation for generalized models of viscoelasticity under quasi-static conditions within the framework of the boundary element method (BEM). The proposed update algorithm is constructed for a generic rheological model of linear viscoelasticity that can either be straightforwardly simplified to recover the basic Kelvin and Maxwell models or readily furthered towards the generalized models of viscoelasticity through the serial or parallel extensions. ...
Probabilistic Models for Cyclic Straining of Saturated Clean Sands

A maximum likelihood framework for the probabilistic assessment of postcyclic straining of saturated clean sands is described. Databases consisting of cyclic laboratory test results including maximum shear and postcyclic volumetric strains in conjunction with relative density, number of stress (strain) cycles, and "index" test results were used for the development of probabilistically based postcyclic strain correlations. For this purpose, in addition to the compilation of existing data from literature, a s...
Probabilistic Assessment of Overtopping Reliability of a Dam
Yanmaz, Ali Melih (2006-05-23)
Probabilistic methods, which consider resistance and load parameters as random variables, are more realistic than conventional deterministic methods for determining the safety level of a dam. This study is based on a probabilistic assessment of overtopping reliability of a flood detention dam. In the analysis, the inflow hydrograph parameters and the initial reservoir level prior to the allocation of the flood in the reservoir are accepted as random variables. A bivariate flood frequency analysis is perform...
Probabilistic Model for the Assessment of Cyclically Induced Reconsolidation (Volumetric) Settlements
Çetin, Kemal Önder; Wu, Jiaer; Kammerer, Annie M.; Seed, Raymond B. (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2009-03-01)
A maximum likelihood framework for the probabilistic assessment of cyclically induced reconsolidation settlements of saturated cohesionless soil sites is described. For this purpose, over 200 case history sites were carefully studied. After screening for data quality and completeness, the resulting database is composed of 49 high-quality, cyclically induced ground settlement case histories from seven different earthquakes. For these case history sites, settlement predictions by currently available methods o...
