Historical fisheries data on Turkish Mediterranean Waters for the past 50 yr are reviewed. Characteristics of the fishing ground, fishing fleet, and fish stocks are described and from the relationship bvetween fishing power of the fishing fleet, and total amount of fish landed, maximum sustainable yield (MSY) has been estimated. On the basis of trawlable fish data, it is found that maximum yield (only for trawl fishery) to be obtained from the Turkish Mediterranean Waters should not exceed 7700 tons, and the fishing power in terms of total HP must be about 20 000 HP to obtained the MSY value provided by the analysis. Regarding the ongoing fishery regulations, suggestions are given for better management tactics which could improve the present day situation.

Current distribution of the small pelagic fish populations in the North Eastern Levantine Sea in relation to environmental conditions and predicting the impacts of temperature rise on their future distributions
Sakınan, Serdar; Gücü, Ali Cemal; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2014)
Stocks of traditionally targeted fish species are in decline in the north eastern Levant Sea due to overfishing during recent decades, while catch statistics show a simultaneous increase in landings of commercially less valuable small pelagic species. Moreover, the number of species in the eastern Mediterranean is increasing due to Lessepsian migration and the response of native species to the continuous migration of lessepsian species is in question. Additionally, warming associated with climate change is ...
Relative body condition of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) and its applicability as an indicator of environmental status
Gücü, Ali Cemal; Ünlüoğlu, Aydın; Ok, Meltem; Karakulak, Firdes Saadet; Aydin, Coskun Menderes; Sarigoz, Suleyman; Beken, Sevcan Colpan Polat (2021-06-01)
This study examines the ratio between length and body weight of 4191 specimens of a prevalent, tertiary tropic level Teleost fish, red mullet (Mullus barbatus) sampled using a standard survey protocol from more than 2500 km by the coasts of Turkey extending along the Mediterranean, Aegean, and the Black Sea. The study's primary aim was to investigate whether there is a correspondence between the body condition of the red mullet and the environmental status independently determined based on lower trophic lev...
Evaluation of the demersal fish assemblages of the northeastern levant sea
Ok, Meltem; Gücü, Ali Cemal; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2012)
Ecosystem-level changes have taken place in the Mediterranean Sea over the last decades due to both anthropogenic interferences and natural perturbations. Compared to the western Mediterranean Sea, influences of these factors especially on flora and fauna characteristics are much more dramatic and intense in the eastern part, particularly in the northeastern Levant Sea where the study area is located. In this study, life history traits of some core species (both native and immigrant) occupying the continent...
A box model for the basic elements of the northeastern Mediterranean Sea trawl fisheries
Gücü, Ali Cemal (1995-01-01)
A box model has been constructed for the northeastern Mediterranean Sea, where there is no reliable information on the total removal of fish by fisheries. The model utilizes survey data of biomass and these initial values are improved by a series of population dynamics methods. Once absolute values for the system components (length-weight relational growth parameters, mortality estimates, selection ogives, stomach content analysis) are established, biomass transfer within the ecosystem compartments is estim...
The promise of transferable fishing concessions on EU fisheries
Kanik, Zafer; Küçükşenel, Serkan (2017-05-01)
Two of the main proposals for the reform of the European Union (EU) Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) in 2011 were related to maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and transferable fishing concessions (TFCs). The European Commission (EC) proposed the goal of achieving MSY for all European fisheries. The EC also proposed implementation of TFCs under some major principles including reserving a part of total quotas for small-scale fishermen in order to prevent the disappearance of small-scale fishing communities in coas...
