This paper reports on a study of students learning the concepts of calculus, particularly derivative, and factors affecting learning in undergraduate calculuscourse in a computer-based learning environment. Interactive Set Language (ISETL)was used to help students to construct mathematical concepts on a computer,'mowedby the discussion held in the classroom. DERIVE was also used to do manipulationsand draw graphs. The results showed that there was a significant improvement inlearningderivativeconceptsingeneral andintwodimensions(graphicalinterpretation and the use of the definition of the derivative). In addition, pre-testscore was the best predictor of success on the post-test score and on the post-test scorecalculated on the problems related to the graphical interpretation. Department, studymajor of the students, was the best predictor on the post-test score calculated on theproblems related to the use of the definition of derivative

Factors affecting performance of tutors during problem-based learning implementations
Ates, Ozlem; Eryılmaz, Ali (2010-02-08)
The study aims to analyze the factors affecting performance of tutors during problem-based learning (PBL) implementations. This study employs a case study design in order to identify and analyze PBL implementations providing detailed and rich descriptions through the perceptions of tutors and students. To this end, four tutors and fourteen students were selected for the case study. The data utilized in this study were collected by means of observations and interviews. The findings of this study indicated th...
Factors affecting faculty intention to use course management systems in a private university
Kültür, Can; Yıldırım, İbrahim Soner; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2009)
This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting faculty intention to use course management systems (CMS). The study was conducted in a private university with a mixed-method approach. First, 260 responses to a questionnaire was analysed by using structural equation modeling technique in order to examine the provided model. Second, interviews with selected 14 faculty members were conducted to understand the interrelationships. The findings indicated that, faculty intention to use CMS is mostly related ...
Factors Influencing the Use of Cognitive Tools in Web Based Learning Environments A Case Study
Özçelik, Erol; Yıldırım, İbrahim Soner (2005-01-01)
High demands on learners in Web-based learning environments and constraints of the human cognitive system cause disorientation and cognitive overload. These problems could be inhibited if appropriate cognitive tools are provided to support learners’ cognitive processes. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing the use of cognitive tools in Web-based learning environments. This study used data from 31 students who attended a course delivered via the Internet. The students used 9 diffe...
Effects of web-based learning tool on student learning in science education: a case study
Şengel, Erhan; Özden, M. Yaşar; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2005)
This exploratory study provides a qualitative and quantitative report on the integration of a specific online information system into the science curriculum using authentic tasks in a class setting. It investigates how they use an online information database and tools to create meaning. An in-depth analysis was done to understand students̕ perceptions about the usability of a web-based learning tool used in science course, properties of a web-based learning tool, the quality of the content, and the structur...
The effects of 5e learning cycle model based on constructivist theory on tenth grade students’ understanding of acid-base concepts
Kılavuz, Yeliz; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2007)
The main purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of 5E learning cycle model based on constructivist theory approach over traditionally designed chemistry instruction on ninth grade students’ understanding of acid-base concepts. Sixty tenth grade students from two classes of a chemistry course taught by the same teacher in Ankara Atatürk Anatolian High School 2004-2005 spring semester were enrolled in the study. The classes were randomly assigned as control and experimental groups. Students in...
