In this work, we propose a new representation for articulated shapes, which does not involve extracting shape components. We first form a high -dimensional feature space by collecting local shape information from each shape point and then perform data analysis to measure the distinctness of each shape point from the remaining points. The obtained distinctness values encode both local and global shape information. We represent shapes via histograms of the distinctness values computed via multiple shape scales.

Scalar waves in spacetimes with closed timelike curves
Buğdaycı, Necmi; Başkal, Sibel; Department of Physics (2005)
The existence and -if exists- the nature of the solutions of the scalar wave equation in spacetimes with closed timelike curves are investigated. The general properties of the solutions on some class of spacetimes are obtained. Global monochromatic solutions of the scalar wave equation are obtained in flat wormholes of dimensions 2+1 and 3+1. The solutions are in the form of infinite series involving cylindirical and spherical wave functions and they are elucidated by the multiple scattering method. Explici...
On equivelar triangulations of surfaces
Adıgüzel, Ebru; Pamuk, Semra; Department of Mathematics (2018)
Persistent homology is an algebraic method for understanding topological features of discrete objects or data (finite set of points with metric defined on it). In algebraic topology, the Mayer Vietoris sequence is a powerful tool which allows one to study the homology groups of a given space in terms of simpler homology groups of its subspaces. In this thesis, we study to what extent does persistent homology benefit from Mayer Vietoris sequence.
Part-based data-driven shape interpolation
Aydınlılar, Melike; Sahillioğlu, Yusuf; Department of Computer Engineering (2018)
An active problem in digital geometry processing is shape interpolation which aims to generate a continuous sequence of in-betweens for a given source and target shape. Unlike traditional approaches that interpolate source and target shapes in isolation, recent data-driven approaches utilize multiple interpolations through intermediate database shapes, and consequently perform better at the expense of a database requirement. In contrast to the existing data-driven approaches that consider intermediate shape...
Effect of vehicular and seismic loads on the performance of integral bridges
Erhan, Semih; Dicleli, Murat; Department of Engineering Sciences (2011)
Integral bridges (IBs) are defined as a class of rigid frame bridges with a single row of piles at the abutments cast monolithically with the superstructure. In the last decade, IBs have become very popular in North America and Europe as they provide many economical and functional advantages. However, standard design methods for IBs have not been established yet. Therefore, most bridge engineers depend on the knowledge acquired from performance of previously constructed IBs and the design codes developed fo...
Comparison of elastic and inelastic behavior of historic masonry structures at the low load levels
Özen, Garip Önder; Ünay, Ali İhsan; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2007)
Conventional methods used in the structural analysis are usually insufficient for the analysis of historical structures because of the complex geometry and heterogeneous material properties of the structure. Today’s computing facilities and methods make FEM the most suitable analysis method for complex structural geometry and heterogeneous material properties. Even the shrinkage, creep of the material can be considered in the analysis. Because of this reason Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to analyze su...
