Recent advances in tissue engineering include the incorporation of multiple cell types into three-dimensional (3D) hydrogels to recapitulate extracellular matrix (ECM) structures and the functionality of living tissues in vitro. For decades, researchers have been investigating the complex mechanisms of cancer metastasis, tumorigenesis, and angiogenesis over two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cell culture models, or in vivo animal models. Increasing numbers of unsuccessful clinical trials for cancer therapy indicate the need to upgrade the current practice in the culturing of cancer cells and modeling of tumor microenvironments in vitro. The use of new 3D hydrogels as a new platform that can recapture many crucial features of the native tumor microenvironment would be advantageous in the assessment of cancer progression and metastasis for clinical trials.

Data Acquisition System for Harmonic Motion Microwave Doppler Imaging
Tafreshi, Azadeh Kamali; Karadas, Muersel; Top, Can Baris; Gençer, Nevzat Güneri (2014-08-30)
Harmonic Motion Microwave Doppler Imaging (HMMDI) is a hybrid method proposed for breast tumor detection, which images the coupled dielectric and elastic properties of the tissue. In this paper, the performance of a data acquisition system for HMMDI method is evaluated on breast phantom materials. A breast fat phantom including fibro-glandular and tumor phantom regions is produced. The phantom is excited using a focused ultrasound probe and a microwave transmitter. The received microwave signal level is mea...
Influence of micropatterned polymeric substrates on cancer cell behavior
Ermiş Şen, Menekşe; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; Demirci, Utkan; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2016)
The aim of this study was to develop micropatterned surfaces on biodegradable polymers such as PLGA and PLLA and non-degradable polymer PMMA to study cellular responses including proliferation, cellular morphology, nucleus morphology and deformation, focal adhesions and related pathways, cell division and cycle, and epithelial to mesenchymal transition in cancer cells. An array of nine surfaces decorated with micron sized micropillars were produced using photolithography. Saos-2 osteosarcoma and hOB human o...
Polyelectrolyte multilayer films as substrates for photoreceptor cells
Tezcaner, Ayşen; Boulmedais, F; SAHEL, JOSE; SCHAAF, PIERRE; VOEGEL, JEAN CLAUDE; LAVALLE, PHILIPPE (2006-01-01)
Reconstruction of extracellular matrix substrates for delivery of functional photoreceptors is crucial in pathologies such as retinal degeneration and age-related macular degeneration. In this study, we assembled polyelectrolyte films using the layer-by-layer deposition method. The buildup of three different films composed of poly(L-lysine)/ chondroitin sulfate (PLL/CSA), poly(L-lysine)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PLL/PSS), or poly(L-lysine)/hyaluronic acid (PLL/HA) was followed by means of quartz crystal micro...
Investigation of SNX3 in colon cancer
Cingöz, Harun; Erson Bensan, Ayşe Elif; Department of Biology (2019)
Sorting Nexin 3 (SNX3) is part of the retromer complex that recycles cargo receptors back to plasma membrane or to Trans Golgi Network. WNT ligand carrier protein Wntless (WLS) is a known SNX3 cargo protein. Our earlier data suggested over expression of SNX3 in colon cancer cells. Considering its importance in receptor recycling, we hypothesized SNX3 to be a potential modulator of cancer related receptors. To begin understanding the role of SNX3, we developed RNAi models of SNX3 in SW480 colon cancer cells ...
