This study aims to test the effects of different way finding affordances on usability of METU virtual campus built in Second Life in terms of users’ satisfaction, performance, and mental workload. Thirty-six participants were randomly assigned to one of the five groups: Map, signboard, voice, agent, and control group. Except the control group, the participants were given navigational tasks in virtual campus. In order to determine the areas which participants paid attention most, eye movements of the participants were examined with eye tracking tool. Moreover, mental workload in their prefrontal cortex was examined with fNIR device. Results showed no significant difference among groups in terms of satisfaction. However, there were significant differences among groups in terms of task completion accuracy, time, length, navigation cue gaze duration, and mental workload. The results of the tests were used to provide guidance for the design of way finding affordances in virtual worlds.

This study aims to test the effects of different way finding affordances on the usability of METU virtual campus built in Second Life virtual world in terms of users’ satisfaction, performance and mental workload. This study was conducted with 36 participants who are students at the Middle East Technical University. Participants were randomly put on of the five groups namely map, signboard, voice and agent groups and a control group. The participants were given navigational tasks in METU virtual campus with...
Effect of goal orientation and different human computer interaction modalities on users’ engagement
Fal, Mehmetcan; Acartürk, Cengiz; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2016)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of goal orientation and alternative human computer interaction modalities on user engagement. Performance-oriented and learning- oriented individuals exhibit motivational differences. Learning-oriented individuals focus on progress and mastery, whereas performance-oriented individuals focus on ability. Twenty-five participants participated in the study. They were asked to accomplish the same task with three alternative modalities of interaction, namely...
Effects of web-based learning tool on student learning in science education: a case study
Şengel, Erhan; Özden, M. Yaşar; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2005)
This exploratory study provides a qualitative and quantitative report on the integration of a specific online information system into the science curriculum using authentic tasks in a class setting. It investigates how they use an online information database and tools to create meaning. An in-depth analysis was done to understand students̕ perceptions about the usability of a web-based learning tool used in science course, properties of a web-based learning tool, the quality of the content, and the structur...
The Effect of Game-based ComputationalThinking Workshops on Students’ ComputationalThinking Skills”
Çakır, Nur; Çakır, Murat Perit (null; 2019-08-16)
This study explores the potential benefits of game design workshops to harness students’ enthusiasm for computer science. The workshop aimed to engage participants in age-appropriate activities that focus on computational thinking skills through the lens of creating their own game. During the workshop participants explored computational thinking in the context of both paper-based and computerized game design activities. A web-based game design interface that allows students to develop and play a game as sim...
Effects of Academic Procrastination on College Students' Life Satisfaction
Ozer, Bilge Uzun; Sackes, Mesut (2010-12-05)
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of procrastination on students' life satisfaction among a group of college students. In this regard, Tuckman Procrastination Scale and Satisfaction with Life Scale were administered to 314 (214 female, 100 male) college students. The average age of the participants was 20.76 (SD = 1.97) with an age range between 17 and 27. The results of the preliminary analysis showed that 38 % (119) of the students claimed to be frequent procrastinator, with male students re...
