A two-phase numerical study was undertaken to address some design issues related to special truss moment frames (STMFs). In the first phase, the design approaches for distribution of shear strength among stories were examined. Multistory STMFs sized, based on elastic and plastic analysis, were evaluated from a performance point of view. A set of time history analyses was conducted to investigate performance parameters such as the interstory drift ratio and the plastic rotation at chord member ends. The results of the analysis reveal that the maximum interstory drifts are not significantly influenced by the design philosophy adopted while considerable differences are observed for plastic rotations. In the second phase, the expected shear strength at Vierendeel openings was studied using three dimensional finite element modeling. The results from finite element analysis reveal that the expected shear strength formulation presented in the AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings is overly conservative. Based on the analysis results, an expected shear strength formula was developed and is presented herein.

A three-phase numerical study was undertaken to address some design issues related with special truss moment frames (STMFs). A numerical study on local buckling and energy dissipation of CHS seismic bracing
Kusyilmaz, Ahmet; Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2011-08-01)
Seismic provisions for steel buildings present limiting width-thickness and slenderness ratios for bracing members, most of which were established based on experimental observations. A finite element study has been undertaken to evaluate these limits for pin-ended circular hollow section (CHS) steel braces. Uncertainties in modeling and quantification arise in the simulation of cyclic brace buckling. A finite element modeling procedure was developed and calibrated using existing experimental data. Sensitivi...
Evaluation of seismic response factors for BRBFs using FEMA P695 methodology
Ozkihc, Yasin Onuraip; Bozkurt, Mehmet Bakir; Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2018-12-01)
This paper reports the details of a numerical study undertaken to evaluate seismic response factors for steel buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs) using the FEMA P695 methodology. In the United States, BRBFs are designed according to Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE 7) and the Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 341). Twenty-four archetypes were designed according to the U.S. specifications and their behavior was assessed by making use of non-simulated c...
A Displacement-Based Approach for the Seismic Retrofitting of Medium Rise Non-Ductile RC Frames with Added Shear Walls
Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Informa UK Limited, 2011-01-01)
A simple displacement-based methodology is presented in this study for the seismic retrofitting of medium height non-ductile concrete frames. Deformation capacities of the existing columns control design. A minimum amount of infill shear walls are added in both orthogonal directions for maintaining the deformation levels below the level dictated by the existing columns, which are usually at the ground story. Interstory drifts and member end rotations are employed as performance parameters. The proposed disp...
Testing and analysis of different hold down devices for CFS construction
Pehlivan, Barış Mert; Baran, Eray; Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2018-06-01)
This paper summarizes the findings of a two-phase study on hold down devices used in cold formed steel (CFS) structural systems. The first phase consisted of component testing and numerical analysis of hold down devices while the second phase was based on testing of CFS framed sheathed wall panels under cyclic lateral loading. Eleven monotonic and three cyclic tensile load tests were performed on seven different types of hold down devices to assess the performance of readily available hold downs and propose...
