A statistical analysis of the PIV data, obtained inside the near wake of a staggered 2-row array of circular cylinders, is performed for the investigation of the effect of sample size, turbulence intensity and the velocity field on the ensemble-averaged data. The PIV measurements are performed at two diameters downstream inside the wake. The ensemble averaged velocity field is obtained using 700 vector maps. The experiments are conducted for a Reynolds number of 10000 based on the inlet velocity and the cylinder diameter. For statistical analysis purposes, 2750 vector maps are collected separately. Variations of the statistical means and variances with sample size for the two components of the velocity vector are obtained for a line of measuring points along y axis at the mid-section of the domain. The turbulence intensity levels vary between 30-70 % along this line. The x and y components of the velocity vector vary between 0.88-5.4 m/s and 0-0.6 m/s, respectively. Using the total number of 2750 samples, 100 randomly selected statistically independent averages of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 ensembles are calculated for each measuring point. The scattering around the mean value for each sample size depends on both the local turbulence intensity level and the local magnitude of the velocity. It is concluded that the errors in the ensemble averaged data increase not only with the increasing turbulence intensity levels but with the decreasing velocity magnitude as well.

Comparison of Temperature Profile and Heat Transfer Predictions With Statistically Modeled Data From a Cooled 1 1 2 Stage High Pressure Transonic Turbine
Kahveci, Harika Senem (2013-06-03)
This paper compares predictions from a 3-D Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code and a statistical representation of measurements from a cooled 1-1/2 stage high-pressure transonic turbine to quantify predictive process sensitivity. A multivariable regression technique was applied to both the inlet temperature measurements obtained at the inlet rake, and the wall temperature and heat transfer measurements obtained via heat-flux gauges on the blade airfoil surfaces. By using the statistically-modeled temperatu...
The Effects of static aeroelasticity on the performance of two-dimensional converging diverging nozzles
Düzel, Ümran; Eyi, Sinan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2014)
This thesis analyzes the effects of static aeroelasticity on the performance of two dimensional converging diverging nozzles. A Flow analysis is conducted on five different configurations of two dimensional converging-diverging nozzles. Computational study is validated with experimental data. Two of the configurations, which have the same throat area, throat radius, and convergence angle and total nozzle length, are selected as the baseline geometries. By modifying throat radius and keeping all other geomet...
The effect of flare geometry on the flow field generated by radial-radial swirlers
Bay, Ayşe; Perçin, Mustafa; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2023-1-27)
An experimental investigation is conducted to assess the impact of the flare geometry on the mean flow field generated by radial-radial swirlers. Two-dimensional two-component PIV measurements are performed on the mid-plane of a non-reacting planar combustor test section. A baseline geometry without a flare is compared to four swirlers with three different flare geometries. Analysis of the time-averaged flow fields reveals that there is an increase in radial velocity values and a decrease in axial velocity ...
The detailed analysis of wavefunction overlaps for InAs/AlSb/GaSb based N-structure type-II SL pin photodetectors
Hostut, M.; Tansel, T.; Kilic, A.; Akın, Tayfun; Ergun, Y. (2019-07-01)
We report on a detailed analysis of electron and hole wave functions with their overlap integrals for InAs/AlSb/GaSb based N-structure type-II superlattice (T2SL) pin detectors under applied reverse bias. Bandgap energies and superlattice minibands are performed by envelope function approximation using pseudopotential method for input parameters such as effective masses and envelope functions at Gamma point. The layer thickness of detector structure is designed to operate in the long wavelength infrared ran...
The Effect of Thickness and Doping on the Nonlinear Absorption Behaviour of IIIA-VIA Group Amorphous Semiconductor Thin Films

The nonlinear optical absorption of InSe, GaSe and GaxIn1-xSe amorphous films with varying thickness and doping has been studied by open-aperture Z-scan experiment with 4 ns and 65 ps pulse durations at 1064 nm wavelength and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results show that the dopant and film thickness (from 20 nm to 104 nm) results in switching from saturable absorption to nonlinear absorption for equal input intensities. This behaviour is attributed to increasing localized defect states with in...
