One of the most neglected forms of diversity, disability, often results in discrimination in a community. Nevertheless, more higher education institutions are working toward creating more inclusive settings, even though this work predominantly regards students with disabilities, not much of faculty members. The study examined the faculty members' lived experiences with disabilities in their work-life in higher education institutions in Turkey. Faculty work and disability are the two main issues of this study. While the social model of disability mainly guides the research to examine the concept of disability, faculty work theory helps to contextualize the concept in a higher education setting. This study is phenomenological research carried out with semi-structured interviews with 15 participants. Overall results showed that the faculty members mostly experience exclusion shaped by colleagues, administrators, and institutions. Both encouraging and inhibiting faculty members' experiences depend on their colleagues, university, type of institution, type of disability, and mainly the administrative attitude. To promote faculty members' full participation in academic life, higher education leaders are expected to restrain the exclusion of the faculty members with disabilities and be committed to offering complete accessibility on campuses.

An Inquiry Into the Necessity of Participation of People with Disabilities in Architecture
Karayama, Hatice Tuğba; Erkılıç, Mualla; Department of Architecture (2022-9-01)
In the second half of the 20th century, disability rights advocates criticized society and authorities for considering disability as personal misfortune and inferiority and for not taking any responsibility for the struggle of people with disabilities. Those critiques developed a new perspective, the Social Model of Disability, affecting disability studies, rights, and policies. The Social Model defined disability as the outcome of the interaction between a person with impairment and the social and built en...
A longitudinal analysis of the effects of task related diversity in groups
Acar, Feride Pınar (Hacettepe Üniversitesi , 2008-07-01)
Existing research on diversity predominantly focuses on diversity in physical, demographic characteristics, although benefits commonly associated with diversity occur as a result of differences in task-related attributes. For taskrelated diversity to lead to the purported advantage of applying a diverse set of knowledge and perspectives on a task, two conditions must be met. First, team members must be aware of their differences creating diversity. Second, members must be able to manage their differences. T...

The attitudes of responsible local agencies towards disability
Gümüş Çağlayan, Deniz; Günay, Baykan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2008)
“New paradigm of disability” relates not only to persons but also to the environment they are living in. Therefore recent studies concentrate on the dynamic interplay of the persons and the environment, rather than rather than studying them as separate entities. This approach has revealed that disabled people become handicapped when they face with barriers restricting or impeding their activities in daily life. Physical, cultural and social barriers have been undertaken by many countries after substantial d...
