Magnetization of bio-glasses (BG) to target tissues is challenging. To identify the optimal magnetite content for BG, samples having various amounts of magnetic phase were prepared. Magnetic bioactive glasses were fabricated by solgel technique and calcined for two hours at 500 ˚C. Samples were named according to magnetite content (wt%) as 10%Fe3O4-BG, 20%Fe3O4-BG, 30%Fe3O4-BG. SEM and XRD investigations were completed on Fe3O4-BG particles. Biological results revealed that samples were not toxic upon their interaction with bone cells.

Synthesis and surface modification studies of biomedical polyurethanes to improve long term biocompatibility
Aksoy, Eda Ayşe; Hasırcı, Nesrin; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
Thrombus formation and blood coagulation is a major problem associated with blood contacting products such as catheters, vascular grafts and artificial hearts. An intense research is being conducted towards the synthesis of new hemocompatible materials and mdifications of surfaces with biological molecules. In this study, polyurethane (PU) films were synthesized in medical purity from diisocyanate and polyol without using any other ingredients and the chemical, thermal and mechanical properties were charact...
Synthesis of Selenium-Incorporated Alpha-Tricalcium Phosphate and Evaluation of Its Cement-Type Reactivity
Baştuğ Azer, Bersu; Durucan, Caner (2018-12-01)
Alpha-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) is a promising hard tissue analog due to its cement-type hydraulic conversion to the mineral component (calcium deficient hydroxyapatite, CDHAp) of natural bone tissue. A variety of different inorganic and organic agents can be incorporated to α-TCP in order to enhance its therapeutic and regenerative properties. In this study, an ionic incorporation - selenium (Se) - was accomplished to impart anti-carcinogenic property to α-TCP. Se-incorporated α-TCP (α-TCP:Se) was obtai...
Evaluation of Staphylococcus aureus DNA aptamer by enzyme-linked aptamer assay and isothermal titration calorimetry
BAYRAÇ, CEREN; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni (2017-02-01)
To monitor the specificity of Staphylococcus aureus aptamer (SA-31) against its target cell, we used enzyme-linked aptamer assay. In the presence of target cell, horseradish peroxidase-conjugated streptavidin bound to biotin-labeled SA-31 showed specific binding to S aureus among 3 different bacteria with limit of detection of 103 colony-forming unit per milliliter. The apparent K-a was 1.39 mu M-1 +/- 0.3 mu M-1. The binding of SA-31 to membrane proteins extracted from cell surface was characterized using ...
GENERATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF HYDROGEL MICRODROPLETS AS BIOINK FOR BIOPRINTING APPLICATIONS
Sucularlı, Ferah; Yıldırım, Ender; Arıkan, Mehmet Ali Sahir (null; 2019-04-11)
In this study, we present a technique for generation of hydrogel microdroplets as bioink for droplet deposition of tissues and organs. We also characterized the size and dispersion of the microdroplets. For this purpose, we designed a flow-focusing droplet generator chip in which uncured hydrogel flowing through a 120 µm wide channel was pinched at two sides of the stream of oil flowing along 300 µm wide channels. The chip was fabricated by ultrasonically embossing the features on polymethylmethacrylate (PM...
Studies Towards the Preparation of Functional Cellulose Microspheres with an Affinity Towards Bacterial Cells
Demirel, Kaan; Akbulut, Doğan; Yılmaz, Ozan; Türkyılmaz, Serhan (2021-04-08)
Cellulose microspheres (CMs, diameters 10-1000 m) have been used as stationary phases in chromatography, substrates for ion exchange applications, supports for protein immobilization and solid-phase synthesis, and drug loading and release materials.2 Furthermore CMs are biocompatible and have been used in many biomedical applications as varied as blood filtration3,4 and the dressing of wounds. Blood is normally sterile and the presence of bacteria in blood is a condition known as bacteremia. Bacteremia can...
