© The Author(s) 2021.The present study aimed to investigate the extent to which audio description contributes to the visually impaired individuals’ comprehension of a film by examining the visually impaired and sighted participants’ comprehension of two versions of the same film, one with and the other without supplementary audio description. The results of the study showed that the visually impaired participants were able to comprehend and narrate the events to the same extent as the sighted participants did when the film was supplemented with audio description. The qualitative analysis validated this finding and demonstrated that the visually impaired participants were able to comprehend the film to a great extent with the assistance of audio description. These findings emphasized the role of audio description assistance and its effects as an important resource in converting visual information to vocal information, which greatly aids the visually impaired individuals’ film comprehension. Also, the use of “Causal Network Model” showed that understanding the plot better could enable the audio description creators to provide better assistance for the visually impaired if they applied this model.

Assessment of performance of horizontal drains in an open pit mine in eastern Turkey
Argunhan Atalay, Çidem; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2021-02-01)
© 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH, DE part of Springer Nature.Prediction of spatial distribution of pore-water pressure and its control are the main issues in open pit mines, since excess pore-water pressure is one of the main causes of slope instability. Horizontal drains are commonly used to relieve the excess pore-water pressure as a method of slope stabilization. This paper presents the efficacy of horizontal drains along two cross-sections in an open pit mine locate...
Efficient exascale discretizations: High-order finite element methods
Kolev, Tzanio; et. al. (2021-01-01)
© The Author(s) 2021.Efficient exploitation of exascale architectures requires rethinking of the numerical algorithms used in many large-scale applications. These architectures favor algorithms that expose ultra fine-grain parallelism and maximize the ratio of floating point operations to energy intensive data movement. One of the few viable approaches to achieve high efficiency in the area of PDE discretizations on unstructured grids is to use matrix-free/partially assembled high-order finite element metho...
Collision-Free Motion Planning for an Aligned Multiple-Turret System Operating in Extreme Environment

© The Author(s), 2021. Published by Cambridge University Press.Instead of using the tedious process of manual positioning, an off-line path planning algorithm has been developed for military turrets to improve their accuracy and efficiency. In the scope of this research, an algorithm is proposed to search a path in three different types of configuration spaces which are rectangular-, circular-, and torus-shaped by providing three converging options named as fast, medium, and optimum depending on the applica...
Prediction of yields and composition of char from fast pyrolysis of commercial lignocellulosic materials, organosolv fractionated and torrefied olive stones

© 2020 The Author(s)This study investigated the fast pyrolysis behaviour of torrefied olive stones, fractionated olive stones and lignocellulosic commercial compounds. Olive stones were reacted in a continuous industrial torrefaction unit. The olive stones were also fractionated into their main components in an organosolv reactor at temperatures from 170 to 190 °C in both the presence and absence of an acidic catalyst. All samples were reacted in a wire mesh reactor at different temperatures (800–1150 °C) a...
The effect of strain rate and temperature on forming limit diagram for DKP-6112 and AZ31 materials
Goksen, Seckin; Darendeliler, Haluk (2020-01-01)
© 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.Forming limit diagrams (FLDs) are used in sheet metal operations widely for predicting blank fracture and forming characteristics of materials. There are three approaches for building forming limit diagrams which are the experimental, theoretical and numerical methods. Experimental method, which includes Nakazima formability test, is generally preferred for determining forming limit diagrams, although it requires complex experimental setup and effort. This study...
