All rights reserved. The Applied Vehicle Technology (AVT) Panel of the NATO Science and Technology Organization has recently engaged a Research Task Group on the topic of rotorcraft flight simulation model fidelity. This group aimed to explore a comprehensive set of methods for flight mechanics simulation fidelity enhancement, including training simulation applications. Particular effort was also directed to the metrics used for simulation fidelity model assessment as suitable for the final intent of the model. The work presented in this paper was carried out in the framework of this Research Task Group, AVT-296, which examined seven different approaches; our paper focusses on just one of these. The objective was to assess flight-model renovation methods through four different applications. As a common approach, flight data from various helicopters were used to extract a set of flight dynamics information (state and control derivatives) that were used to compute corrective force and moment terms. The approach consists of a comparison between flight-test and flight mechanics model derivatives to compute delta forces and moments. These delta terms are added to the forces and moments through a linear combination and to generate the additional accelerations needed to capture any lacking dynamics. The derivatives that require updating need to be identified and, of course, will depend on the nature of the modelling deficiency. This paper shows how this method is applied to enhancing the lateral-directional oscillatory characteristics of flight models and how they can be upgraded to achieve higher fidelity for design and development applications but with special attention to meeting the fidelity requirements for flight training simulators.

Fretting fatigue failure of lug-bush connection members under tensile loading
Özen, Emine Burçin; Çöker, Demirkan (2019-01-01)
© 2019 The Vertical Flight Society. All rights reserved.Lug-bush connection members are used widely in the aerospace industry. Under cyclic loads, these connection members fail due to fretting fatigue. The tensile fatigue loading creates sliding and sticking regions at the lug-bush interface and leads to the fracture of the lug. In this study, four different lug-bush members are investigated. Different surface conditions are observed at the sticking and sliding regions of all members. Black residues are obs...

Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only. The real-Time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis using nasal swab samples is the gold standard approach for COVID-19 diagnosis. However, due to the high false-negative rate at lower viral loads and complex test procedure, PCR is not suitable for fast mass screening. Therefore, the need for a highly sensitive and rapid detection system based on easily collected fluids such as saliva during the pandemic has emerged. In t...
TACO: Helicopter noise predictions
Yücekayalı, Arda; Şenipek, Murat; Ortakaya, Yüksel; Özyörük, Yusuf (null; 2019-01-01)
© 2019 The Vertical Flight Society. All rights reserved. In this paper, isolated rotor noise validation and identification of full helicopter BVI noise are performed by a recently developed aerodynamic noise calculation code TACO. TACO results are compared and validated with PSU-WOPWOP which is a widely known aerodynamic noise calculation tool and HART-II wind tunnel test data. Time dependent pressure and blade position data required by the acoustic codes are generated with CHARM using full helicopter trim a...
Noise prediction of a transonic cavity flow via shear-layer-adapted delayed detached-eddy simulation
Yalçın, Özgür; Özyörük, Yusuf (2018-01-01)
© 2018 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved. An open cavity flow contains a highly turbulent shear layer which separates from the upstream edge and impinges on the aft wall of the cavity, causing intense noise emission. In this study, a delayed detached-eddy simulation (DDES) with the use of "shear-layer-adapted" subgrid length scale, an enhancement of DDES available in literature, is conducted for such an open cavity flow problem. The results show that this len...
Analysis and adjoint design optimization of hypersonic blunt bodies
Piskin, Tugba; Eyi, Sinan (2014-01-01)
© 2014 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved. The main purpose of this study is to analyze hypersonic flow field around the blunt bodies and to design of that bodies in order to obtain minimum pressure drag. Modeling of non-equilibrium must be done properly. In this study, non-equilibriums of thermal and chemical modes are considered. Translational and rotational energy modes are assumed that energy exchange between these modes is so fast. Vibrational and electro...
