Culverts and diversion tunnels are structures that can be exposed to many different hydraulic conditions throughout their lifetime. It is essential to know the flow behaviors that will occur in these conduits to size them and take the necessary precautions. In order to understand the characteristics of these conditions, a number of analyses should be made. In this study, all possible hydraulic situations that may occur throughout these conduits are examined by considering the tunnel structure as a long-span culvert. A software has been developed to do such analyses using a user's set of data and show the results in the form of graphics and tables. As a consequence, the performance curve and the water surface profile according to various flow rates were obtained. In addition, the operability of the conduit as a storage structure is examined, and routing analyses are produced in this direction. To demonstrate how to use the software and describe the findings of the analyses, example cases are generated and discussions are presented.

Behaviour of pressurized tunnels are determined by the mechanical and geometrical properties of lining, mechanical properties and overburden pressure, and the quality of contact zone between rock and lining. Evaluation of twin tunnel-induced surface ground deformation by empirical and numerical analyses (NATM part of Eurasia tunnel, Turkey)
Agbay, Ebru; Topal, Tamer (2020-03-01)
Pre-support systems are very important for inner-city shallow tunnels in order to minimize twin tunnel-induced surface deformations. However, previous studies concerning the assessment of the magnitude of surface displacements caused by twin tunneling have not considered the effects of a pre-support system and stress release by deformation. The aim of this study is to introduce a procedure for obtaining modification factor including the effects of a pre-support system and the rock mass quality that can be u...
Evaluation of structural analysis methods used for the design of tbm segmental linings
Çimentepe, Ahmet Güray; Caner, Alp; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Contrary to the linings of conventionally driven tunnels, the linings of tunnels bored by tunnel boring machines (TBMs) consist of precast concrete segments which are articulated or coupled at the longitudinal and circumferential joints. There are several analytical and numerical structural analysis methods proposed for the design of TBM segmental linings. In this thesis study, different calculation methods including elastic equation method and two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) beam – spring m...
Renovation of a safety-inspection methodology for river bridges
Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Caner, Alp (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2007-09-21)
River bridges and related infrastructural elements need to be monitored and inspected periodically for deterioration and loss of function due to aging, adverse hydraulic conditions, and chemical attacks. Necessary protective works and related actions should then be implemented to increase safety. Types of items to be inspected would be categorized as structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, and structural material conditions. Requirements for periodic inspections and the ways of handling these activities were d...
Bayesian network based decision support for predicting and mitigating delay risk in TBM tunnel projects
Koseoglu Balta, G.C.; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (2021-09-01)
Tunnel projects involve high levels of uncertainty stemming from the vagueness of geological conditions and the complexity of the mechanized tunnel boring process. Delay risk assessment is carried out by project managers to identify critical risk factors leading to time and cost overruns and formulate strategies to meet the project targets under different scenarios. In this study, a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) based risk assessment method was developed for Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnel projects to pr...
