General anesthesia is one of the most important advances in medical history allowing the execution of medical procedures that would be too painful to tolerate for conscious patients. Despite over 170 years of general clinical practice in Western medicine, neither the mechanism of general anesthesia nor thespecific target(s) of general anesthetics are known. While it would seem obvious that anesthetic agents perturb membrane-bound signaling proteins, it is unclear whether the primary target of anesthetic agents are actually the proteins or the surrounding lipid membrane. To further understand how anesthetic agents affect lipid membranes, the effect of inhalation anesthetics chloroform, halothane, and isoflurane on phospholipid-cholesterol interaction energies was investigated. Interactions of theseagents with model membranes consisting of cholesterol and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC), in both the liquid-ordered (lo) and liquid-disordered (ld) phases, were studiedand phospholipid-cholesterol interaction energies were measured using the nearest-neighborrecognition technique.1-3 All three anesthetic agents caused a weakening of phospholipid-cholesterolinteractions in the lo phase by about 30 kcal/mol at clinically-relevant concentrations (2 mM).Conversely, the same anesthetics caused a strengthening of phospholipid-cholesterol interactions bya similar magnitude in the ld phase. Furthermore, through binding studies, evidence for 1:1 complexformation between phospholipids and chloroform and halothane has been obtained. The relevance of these findings within the context of current theories of mechanism of general anesthesia will be discussed.

Why Would Opt-Out System for Organ Procurement Be Fairer?
CİVANER, MUSTAFA MURAT; Alpinar, Zumrut; Ors, Yaman (2010-01-01)
The possibility of organ transplantation has created new problems for medical ethics as well as clinical medicine. One of them, organ procurement, is tried to be solved mainly by two systems. Many countries have adopted the 'opt-in system', which aims to raise awareness and make the individuals donate their organs by their own will. The other system, 'optout' or 'presumed consent', which considers all members of society as potential donors, was adopted by some countries. In this system, individuals should s...
The association between organizational culture and individual factors on medical practice
Saraç, Çakıl; Lajunen, Timo; Department of Psychology (2007)
The aim of the present research was to investigate the relationships between patient safety culture within hospitals and individual factors on medical practice among physicians. A total of 240 physicians from ten different hospitals completed the Medical Practice Questionnaire, Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture, Maslach Burnout Inventory and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised- Abbreviated Form. In order to assess frequency and types of medical errors, Medical Practice Questionnaire was develo...
Selenium doped calcium phosphate biomimetic coating on Ti6Al4V orthopedic implant material for anti-cancer and anti-bacterial purposes
Yılmaz, Bengi; Evis, Zafer; Banerjee, Sreeparna; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2014)
In order to prevent recurrent osteosarcoma in patients undergone surgical resection for implant insertion and infection around implant site, which is a very common complication after surgery, it is very important to functionalize the surface. In this study, to combine the effective antioxidant and potential anti-cancer and anti-bacterial properties of selenium with the high biocompatibility and bioactivity of hydroxyapatite, selenium was added to the structure of hydroxyapatite via biomimetic method and coa...
Tissue Engineered, Guided Nerve Tube Consisting of Aligned Neural Stem Cells and Astrocytes
Yucel, Deniz; Kose, Gamze Torun; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat (2010-12-01)
Injury of the nervous system, particularly in the spinal cord, impairs the quality of life of the patient by resulting in permanent loss of neurologic function. The main limitation in spinal cord regeneration is the lack of extracellular matrix to guide nerves for functional recovery of the transected nerve tissue. In the present study, a tissue engineered nerve tube was prepared by wrapping neural stem cells (NSCs) on aligned fibers using a micropatterned film with astrocytes aligned along the microgrooves...
Shared decision making: a serious game based on OSCE for clinicians
Sülün, Ahmet; Yet, Barbaros; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2022-8-31)
Shared decision making(SDM) is an essential process to improve outcomes and reflect patient views in medical consultation. In SDM, the treatment that patient will take is a decision reached by the participation of both the clinician and the patient. To achieve SDM, clinicians should explain possible treatment options with their pros and cons and encourage patients to join in the process, and patients should state their ideas about the options and preferences about the outcomes. This process follows three st...
