Human activities such as food preparation, cooking, garbage disposal, tool production leave their traces on surfaces by producing residues; some are physically collectible, while some residues get deposited within the soil, only to be identified through chemical analysis. The main purpose of this study is to generate additional, high-resolution data by combining geochemical and analytical analyses with archaeological evidence in order to interpret spatial organization documented through many years of excavation at the site of Burgaz, Datça. Soil samples collected during excavations at Burgaz were subject to elemental analysis by using ICP-AES and other analytical methods; the results are interpreted with respect to human use of spaces and artefact distribution at the site.

Hydration layer: a potential key to manage colloidal processing of oxide nanopowder suspensions
Çınar, Simge (2017-07-13)
The majority of ceramic processing techniques relies on the successful slurry preparation that ensures homogeneous distribution of powders in a highly loaded slurry with manageable flow characteristics. Only with effective slurry formulation, crack- and pore- free structures can ultimately be manufactured. However, this still remain a challenging issue for advancing technology of additive manufacturing. The available models to predict the colloidal properties of nanopowder slurries therefore require improve...
Research and product design to minimize food waste in western domestic kitchens
Bekteş, Ahmet; Pedgley, Owaın Francıs; Aprile, Walter; Department of Industrial Design (2010)
The aim of this thesis is to explore design directions to minimize a food wastage problem in western domestic kitchens. Central to the thesis is an understanding of people’s behavior towards the food waste phenomenon. Three interconnected studies and one design project are included. In Study I, 18 participants were interviewed to explore their perceptions and attitudes towards food waste, revealing the most wasted food types and reasons for food wastage. The findings of Study I are clustered under four phas...
Physical characterization of high methoxyl pectin and sunflower oil wax emulsions: A low-field H-1 NMR relaxometry study
Akkaya, Sinem; Özel, Barış; Öztop, Halil Mecit; YANIK, DERYA KOÇAK; GÖĞÜŞ, FAHRETTİN (Wiley, 2020-12-01)
Pectin-wax-based emulsion systems could be used to form edible films and coatings with desired water permeability characteristics. Pectin is often used in food industry due to its gelling and viscosity increasing properties. Physical properties of pectin are highly dependent on its esterification degree. Waxes are commonly used as edible coatings to enhance the water barrier properties of food products. This study focuses on preparing emulsions with sunflower oil wax (SFW) and high methoxyl pectin (HMP) at ...
Surface modified multi-functional PCL/TCP fibrous scaffolds
Malikmammadov, Elbay; Endoğan Tanır, Tuğba; Kızıltay, Aysel; Hasırcı, Nesrin; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat (2016-05-17)
Porous and fibrous scaffolds prepared using various methods are essential components of tissue engineering. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), due to its biocompatibility and mechanical properties, is one of the most desirable polymers in scaffold preparation for bone tissue engineering applications, and there are many studies on modification of PCL to enhance its biocompatibility. In this study, porous and fibrous scaffolds of PCL containing TCP were prepared by wet spinning and gelatin was immobilized onto it to...
Performance assessment of compacted bentonite/sand mixtures utilized as isolation material in underground waste disposal repositories
Ada, Mahir; Akgün, Haluk; Department of Geological Engineering (2007)
The design and development of isolation or backfill materials, which seal the disposal facility, are important for disposing the wastes. The use of compacted bentonite-sand for construction of shaft seals and liners for waste containment structures has been proposed by various studies. Therefore; it is aimed in this study to develop an isolation material to be used in underground waste repositories. For such designs to be effective, their performance need to be assessed and a minimum hydraulic conductivity ...
