This paper is concerned with developing a semiparametric panel model to explain the trend in UK temperatures and other weather outcomes over the last century. We work with the monthly averaged maximum and minimum temperatures observed at the twenty six Meteorological Office stations. The data is an unbalanced panel. We allow the trend to evolve in a nonparametric way so that we obtain a fuller picture of the evolution of common temperature in the medium timescale. Profile likelihood estimators (PLE) are proposed and their statistical properties are studied. The proposed PLE has improved asymptotic property comparing the sequential two-step estimators. Finally, forecasting based on the proposed model is studied. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Simulation of the Quenching Process for Predicting Temperature, Microstructure and Residual Stresses
Simsir, Caner; Gür, Cemil Hakan (2010-02-01)
A finite element model capable of predicting the temperature history, evolution of microstructure and residual stresses in the quenching process is presented. Proposed model was integrated into Msc. Marc software via user subroutines. Verification of the model was performed by X-ray diffraction residual stress measurements on a series of steel cylinders quenched. A Feasibility study for external control on self-organized production of plasmonic enhancement interfaces for solar cells
Zolfaghari Borra, Mona; Bek, Alpan; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2013)
The present study is about the improvement of the energy conversion efficiency of solar cells in which plasmonic light-trapping approach has been investigated. In this study, metal nanoparticles are allowed to form in a self-organized fashion on both flat and textured full scale monocrystalline silicon solar cell. These metal nanoparticles with strong optical interaction cross-sections at localized plasmonic resonance energies, improve coupling of the incoming light into the active area of solar cells by wa...
Evaluating a mesoscale atmosphere model and a satellite-based algorithm in estimating extreme rainfall events in northwestern Turkey
Yücel, İsmail (Copernicus GmbH, 2014-01-01)
Quantitative precipitation estimates are obtained with more uncertainty under the influence of changing climate variability and complex topography from numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. On the other hand, hydrologic model simulations depend heavily on the availability of reliable precipitation estimates. Difficulties in estimating precipitation impose an important limitation on the possibility and reliability of hydrologic forecasting and early warning systems. This study examines the performance o...
A Model for Predicting Theoretical Process Energy Consumption of Rotational Parts Using STEP AP224 Features
Uluer, Muhtar Ural; Akkuş, Kadir; KILIÇ, SADIK ENGİN (2013-04-17)
Energy efficiency in manufacturing has become a key concern due to the increased awareness of the adverse effects of global warming. First step for increasing energy efficiency is to quantify the energy consumed for manufacturing processes. This study presents a prediction model for the theoretical energy that is consumed during the manufacturing processes of a rotational part and resulting CO2 release. Theoretical energy is the tool tip energy required to remove the given volume of chip. Prediction model i...
A nonintrusive diagnostics technique for flame soot based on near-infrared emission spectrometry
Ayrancı Kılınç, Işıl; Selçuk, Nevin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2007)
A novel nonintrusive soot diagnostics methodology was developed, validated and applied for in-situ determination of temperature, volume fraction and refractive index of soot aggregates formed inside flames by using near-infrared emission spectrometry. Research was conducted in three main parts, first one addressing development and validation of a comprehensive "direct" model for simulation of line-of-sight radiative emission from axisymmetric sooty flames by coupling sub-models for radiative transfer, radia...
