Over the last few years, the European Union has been experiencing a period of never-ending crises. The responses given by the EU and member states to these crises have shaped the EU and the political atmosphere in the member states. Analyzing the effects of crises on the EU and its member states is critical in understanding the changing dynamics of the European integration. Since 2015, the Refugee Crisis has dramatically affected and transformed European politics. Far-right political parties have grown more outspoken in shaping the political atmosphere as a response to the Refugee Crisis. The case of Germany shows that the Refugee Crisis has impacted the political atmosphere all over Europe, with increasing anti-immigration and anti-EU discourses in its aftermath. Furthermore, the competition among political parties has changed its shape and intensity, and far-right groups such as the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in Germany, which has begun to gain political influence, have been regarded as influential in shaping immigration and EU policies. Such parties have instrumentalized the Refugee Crisis as a political opportunity to move towards mainstream constituents and enlarge their sphere of influence in domestic politics. Additionally, the rise of these parties has also limited the movements of mainstream parties and, therefore, played a crucial role in the emergence of more Eurosceptic and anti-immigration policies. In this regard, this dissertation aims to contribute to the literature on European integration by addressing the effects of the Refugee Crisis on the political atmosphere in Germany with the assumptions of the post-functionalist theory.

Radical right-wing populism and climate action in Europe: the case of the alternative for Germany (AfD)
İskender Düğencioğlu, Burcu.; Şenyuva, Özgehan; Department of European Studies (2019)
As the driving force of the EU economy and the main bearer of the economic consequences of the bailout of the weak economies of the EU in the wake of the Euro Crisis of 2008, Germany has become a conducive ground for populist politics with its vast immigrant population. In such a political environment, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) which came out in the aftermath of the Euro Crisis as the right-wing populist party in German politics, gradually reinforced itself as the rising actor in both state and fede...
Patterns of Resilience during Socioeconomic Crises among Households in Europe (RESCuE)
Aytekin, Erden Attila(2017-2-28)
Since 2008, Europe has been shaken by an ongoing crisis. If relevant parts of populations are exposed to socioeconomic risks, it is a distinctive characteristic of European political ethics that they must not be left alone, but should be subject to support and solidarity by budget support policy, economic development policies and social policy at different levels. But, in analogy with medical and psychological findings, some parts of the vulnerable population, although experiencing the same living condition...

Economic activities that stem from this process have provided new opportunities for labor exporting countries. ALTERNATIVES FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION'S NATURAL GAS DEPENDENCY ON RUSSIA
Kalafat, Kaan; Torun, Zerrin; Department of European Studies (2023-1-06)
Even after the withdrawal of the United Kingdom, the European Union -as a single market- is still among the biggest economies in the world. However, retaining and expanding this economy is a big hurdle to tackle due to the dependency on ever-decreasing natural resources on the continent that fuel it. Therefore, there have been attempts made by the Union to sustain its resource demand for the duration of transitioning to renewables. One such attempt is the usage of natural gas as a stopgap energy source unti...
The Role of Foreign Policy-related Issues on the Rise of Right-wing Populism: The Case of Hungary.
Ceydilek, Erdem (2018-09-14)
If the rise of the populist radical right in Europe is one fact, the other fact is that, as even a skin-deep look at their discourses will show, the roots of this rise mostly lay in the foreign policy-related issues such as EU membership, immigration policies and security. On the other hand, it is also observable that domestic political gains have priority for these European populist radical right (EPRR) leaders than the foreign policy goals. For this reason, foreign policy issues have an ambivalent nature ...
