Electroplating onto polymeric materials is required for different purposes in various applications. Commercial polyurethanes (PU) are electrically insulator materials and durable at high temperatures. Nevertheless, the PU used in this study has a relatively higher electrical conductivity, lower thermal expansion and is a high density foam. In this work, surface metallisation of PU foam was studied to prepare the surface for subsequent electroplating processes. Surface metallisation was carried out by sensitisation, activation and electroless nickel (Ni) plating. Metallised surfaces were characterised according to surface morphologies after electrochemical Ni plating at different current densities and surface preparations. Roughness as well as electrical conductivity of the coatings was investigated. The results show that increasing current density adversely affects the surface morphology and metallisation processes enhance the surface conductivity of the foam.

Electrochromic properties of multicolored novel polymer synthesized via combination of benzotriazole and N-functionalized 2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrole units

Synthesis of new conducting polymers is desired since their electrochemical and optical properties enable them to be used as active layers in many device applications. Benzotriazole and N-functionalized 2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrole (SNS Series) containing polymers showed very promising results as electrochromic materials. In order to observe the effect of the combination of these two units, three new monomers; 2-(6-(2,5-bis(5-methylthiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)hexyl)-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2H benzo[d][1,2,3...
Carbon coating of magnesium particles
Aktekin, Burak; Eyovge, Cavit; Öztürk, Tayfur (2017-10-05)
Magnesium when hydrided has low thermal and electrical conductivity and carbon coating would be useful to remedy this for a variety of purposes. In this study, carbon coating was achieved by co-feeding magnesium and methane into a thermal plasma reactor. This yielded carbonaceous material with magnesium particles 5-10 nm in size embedded in graphitic matrix. A further reduction down to 2-3 nm was possible but required reductions in the precursor feed rate. 2 wt% carbon was sufficient to fully protect magnes...
Metallization of the C-60/Rh(100) interface revealed by valence photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations

The electronic structure of single and multiple layers of C-60 molecules deposited on a Rh(100) surface is investigated by means of valence photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The binding of the fullerene monolayer to the metal surface yields the appearance of a new state in the valence band spectrum crossing the Fermi level. Insight into the metallization of the metal/fullerene interface is provided by the calculated electronic structure that allows us to correlate the me...
Polystyrene / boron nitride nanotube composites: synthesis, processing and characterization
Balık, Erdem; Bayram, Göknur; Sezgi, Naime Aslı; Department of Chemical Engineering (2015)
In recent years, boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have been added to polystyrene (PS) which is a widely used thermoplastic polymer in order to improve its thermal and mechanical properties. Solution mixing and melt blending techniques are commonly used methods to prepare polymer-boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) composites. However, these two composite preparation methods have a common problem about the dispersion of fillers in the polymer matrix. In this study, PS-BNNT composites were prepared using masterbatch...
