Increasing hot corrosion durability of aluminide coatings is important to extend the life-time of turbine blades. The addition of hafnium, yttrium, zirconium, chromium, platinum and cobalt improves performance of aluminide coating by increasing oxide adherence and selective oxide formation rate. In this research, the effect of adding ternary elements (Y, Cr, Y/Cr, Zr, and Hf) on Type-1 hot corrosion behavior of aluminide coatings was investigated by accelerated isothermal corrosion test at 900 °C for up to 400 hours. To simulate harsh environmental conditions, Na2SO4 and V2O5 containing solutions were applied to substrate surface. Subsequently, for 1, 50, 100, 200 and 400 hours exposure times, the oxide layer thicknesses, spallation time, coating layer depletion time, and elemental analysis of each set were analyzed and their performances compared to each other.

Investigation of the Mechanical Properties of Al2O3 Reinforced Nickel Composite Coatings
Yılmaz, Olgun; Karakaya, İshak (2018-03-15)
Addition of inert ceramic particles improves the mechanical and tribological properties of nickel coatings significantly. Two different surfactants; ammonium lignosulfonate (ALS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were used in a typical sulfamate nickel plating solution in varying concentrations to arrange the floatation and wetting conditions of Al2O3 particles (~300 nm) in the electrolyte. In addition to the effect of surfactants, effects of current density and...

An Investigation on fatigue crack propagation in gas metal and hybrid plasma-gas metal arc weldments of AA5083-H111
Okan, Kemal; Gürbüz, Rıza; Yurtışık, Koray; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2015)
5083 aluminum alloy among 5XXX series has the greatest strength and is commonly used for its good weldability, corrosion resistance and moderate strength. In this study, 5083-H111 aluminum alloy plates were joined by Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Hybrid Plasma Arc Welding (HPAW) techniques. Mechanical strength of base metal (BM) and welded samples was examined using hardness, tensile and toughness tests. Crack propagation behavior of BM, GMA welded and HPA welded samples was investigated by fatigue crack...

Assessment of the Effect of Hybrid GFRP CFRP Usage in Wind Turbine Blades on the Reduction of Fatigue Damage Equivalent Loads in the Wind Turbine System
Gözcü, Ozan; Farsadi, Touraj; Şener, Özgün; Kayran, Altan (null; 2015-01-05)
The use of hybrid GFRP-CFRP material in wind turbine blades is investigated for its effectiveness in reducing fatigue damage equivalent loads in the whole wind turbine system, and comparisons are made against the baseline full GFRP blade in terms of strength, deformation, dynamic characteristics, weight and cost of the blade. To achieve load alleviation in the whole wind turbine system, bending-twisting coupling in composite blades is exploited through the use of off-axis plies in the spar caps of the blade...
