Preliminary results from the North Anatolian Fault Passive Seismic Experiment Seismicity and anisotropy
Biryol, C. Berk; Özacar, Atilla Arda; Beck, Susan L.; Zandt, George (2006-12-11)
The North Anatolian Fault (NAF) is one of the world's largest continental strike-slip faults. Despite much geological work at the surface, the deep structure of the NAF is relatively unknown. The North Anatolian Fault Passive Seismic Experiment is mainly focused on the lithospheric structure of this newly coalescing continental transform plate boundary. In the summer of 2005, we deployed 5 broadband seismic stations near the fault to gain more insight on the background seismicity, and in June 2006 we deploy...
Preliminary Estimation of Kappa Parameter in Croatia
Stanko, Davor; Markusic, Snjezana; Ivancic, Ines; Mario, Gazdek; Gülerce, Zeynep (IOP Publishing; 2017-09-15)
Spectral parameter kappa is used to describe spectral amplitude decay “crash syndrome” at high frequencies. The purpose of this research is to estimate spectral parameter kappa for the first time in Croatia based on small and moderate earthquakes. Recordings of local earthquakes with magnitudes higher than 3, epicentre distances less than 150 km, and focal depths less than 30 km from seismological stations in Croatia are used. The value of kappa was estimated from the acceleration amplitude spectrum of sh...
Preliminary estimation of the tsunami hazards associated with the Makran subduction zone at the northwestern Indian Ocean
Heidarzadeh, Mohammad; Pirooz, Moharram D.; Zaker, Nasser H.; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (2009-02-01)
We present a preliminary estimation of tsunami hazard associated with the Makran subduction zone (MSZ) at the northwestern Indian Ocean. Makran is one of the two main tsunamigenic zones in the Indian Ocean, which has produced some tsunamis in the past. Northwestern Indian Ocean remains one of the least studied regions in the world in terms of tsunami hazard assessment. Hence, a scenario-based method is employed to provide an estimation of tsunami hazard in this region for the first time. The numerical model...
