This case study highlights that shale wells drilled with tight well spacing in the same landing zone using the same fracture treatment plan, commonly show large variance in well productivity. Searching for the root cause(s) of this variance in performance, we conclude that the factory model - which assumes wells can be engineered in reproducible and identical ways - is not yet feasible in practice. For each well, largely similar fracture treatment schedules result in different fracture half lengths. Also, a significant proportion of perforations may fail to create any hydraulic fractures at all. This new reality means that underperforming wells in otherwise promising acreage are more likely an indication of varying fracture treatment response, rather than a result of poor source rock. Research focusing on the reduction of fracture treatment variance therefore deserves priority and may help steady the performance of future wells.

A Comparative study of cuttings transport performance of water versus polymer-based fluids in horizontal well drilling
Allahvirdizadeh, Payam; Parlaktuna, Mahmut; Kuru, Ergun; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2015)
High drilling fluid circulation rate is often needed for effective transportation of cuttings in horizontal and extended reach wells, which may not be always achievable due to the risk of fracturing the rock by increased bottom hole dynamic pressure and also limit of pumps capacity. Keeping the bottom hole pressure low enough while increasing the flow rate is, therefore, a major challenge in horizontal well drilling operations. A potential solution to this problem would be to use drag reducing additives in ...
An investigation of polymerflooding in limestone reservoirs with a bottom water zone
Bağcı, Ali Suat; Hodaie, H (Informa UK Limited, 2003-03-01)
The effects of polymers on waterflooding of a limestone reservoir with or without a bottom water zone, as well as the effect of vertical and horizontal production wells on oil recovery, have been investigated in laboratory models. Sixteen core flood displacement tests were conducted to study the effect of relative oil-water layer thickness, polymer slug size, and well configuration in a production port. A qualitative comparison was made to show the difference between waterflooding and polymer-augmented wate...
Investigating strength and deformation characteristics of microbially induced calcite precipitation treated loose sand
Duman, Emre; Pekcan, Onur; Department of Civil Engineering (2020-9)
Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is a recently proposed novel environmentally friendly ground improvement method that is alternating to conventional ground improvement techniques. MICP has been under intense investigation by researchers from different civil engineering sub-disciplines to mitigate problems related to crack propagation of concrete, insufficient soil strength characteristics, soil erosion, asphalt cracks, etc. This study focuses on the effect of MICP treatment on the stre...
Determination of cuttings transport properties of gasified drilling fluids
Ettehadi Osgouei, Reza; Mehmetoğlu, Mustafa Tanju; Özbayoğlu, Mehmet Evren; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2010)
The studies conducted on hole cleaning have been started with single phase drilling fluids for vertical holes in 1930’s, and have reached to multiphase drilling fluids for directional and horizontal wells today. The influence of flow rate and hole inclination on cuttings transport has been well understood, and many studies have been conducted on effective hole cleaning either experimentally or theoretically. However, neither the hydraulic behavior nor the hole cleaning mechanism of gasified drilling fluids ...
DEVELOPMENT OF A 3-D TOPOGRAPHICAL BASIN STRUCTURE BASED ON SEISMIC AND GEOTECHNICAL DATA: CASE STUDY AT A HIGH SEISMICTY AREA OF GÖLYAKA, DÜZCE, TURKEY
Yousefıbavıl, Karim; Koçkar, Mustafa Kerem; Akgün, Haluk (2018-06-21)
The near-fault situation and high seismicity of an area makes the determination of the bedrock geometry more complex, and in return, it makes this area much more critical and important for the studies of site response analysis in account of seismic hazard assessment. Without a good model of topography and basin structure, any powerful calculation method would be in lack of a well-developed basin response. The study has been conducted in the Gölyaka basin that uniquely falls within the bifurcated section of ...
