The objective of this study was to examine the effects of Pilates exercise on abdominal and lower back strength, abdominal muscular endurance and posterior trunk flexibility of sedentary adult females. The body fat and body mass index (BMI) pre-and post-data were also assessed as secondary outcomes. To assess abdominal and lower back strength, posterior trunk flexion and extension data were obtained concentrically on a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer at speeds of 601 and 120 degrees s(-1). Abdominal muscular endurance was assessed using the crunch test and posterior trunk flexibility was measured using the sit and reach test. Results of multivariate analysis revealed a significant difference (p < .05) between pre-and post-measures of 60 degrees s(-1) flexion/extension and 120 degrees s(-1) flexion, and abdominal muscular endurance and posterior trunk flexibility of the exercise group. It can be concluded that there was a positive effect of Modern Pilates mat exercises on abdominal and lower back muscular strength, abdominal muscular endurance and posterior trunk flexibility in sedentary adult females regardless of the fact that the body weight and fat percentages did not differ significantly. Effects of eccentric hamstring training on lower extremity strength and landing kinetics in female recreational athletes
Salcı, Yaşar; Korkusuz, Feza; Department of Physical Education and Sports (2008)
The purpose of this study was to display increase in eccentric hamstring strength after 10-weeks training program. Secondly, if such an increase occurred, would this strength change result in altered landing kinetics and improved jumping performance? 27 recreational female athletes assigned into experimental (n = 14) and control (n = 13) groups. Baseline measures of landing kinetics were collected using a force plate, strength data and proprioceptive measurements were evaluated using an isokinetic dynamomet...
Integrating Pilates exercise into an exercise program for 65+year-old women to reduce falls
BABAYİĞİT İREZ, GÖNÜL; Ozdemir, Recep Ali; Evin, Ruya; Irez, Salih Gokhan; Korkusuz, Feza (2011-03-01)
The purpose of this study was to determine if Pilates exercise could improve dynamic balance, flexibility, reaction time and muscle strength in order to reduce the number of falls among older women. 60 female volunteers over the age of 65 from a residential home in Ankara participated in this study. Participants joined a 12-week series of 1-hour Pilates sessions three times per week. Dynamic balance, flexibility, reaction time and muscle strength were measured before and after the program. The number of fal...
Effects of swiss ball training on knee joint reposition sense, core strength and dynamic balance in sedentary collegiate students
Cuğ, Mutlu; Korkusuz, Feza; Department of Physical Education and Sports (2012)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Swiss ball training on (1) knee joint reposition sense (knee proprioception), (2) core muscle strength and (3) dynamic balance in sedentary collegiate students. In this thesis, two different participant groups and two different training methods were used. In order to evaluate the effect of Swiss ball training on knee proprioception and core strength, 3 days per week training was conducted throughout 10 weeks (Study 1). In order to evaluate the effe...

Effects of 5 week nordic hamstring strength training on 10-12 years old male basketball players
Tansel, Rıfat Baran; Korkusuz, Feza; Department of Physical Education and Sports (2006)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Nordic hamstring strength training (NHST) program on (1) leg power, (2) vertical jump, (3) and knee proprioception measurements of 10-12 years old male basketball players. Nordic Hamstring Strength Training (NHST) group (N=16), participated in basketball training plus in Nordic hamstring strength training, while the control group (N=11) participated in basketball training only. Subjects were tested before and after 5-week training program for, vert...
