The main purpose of this paper is to optimize winglet geometry by using CFD with Genetic Algorithm and study its effects on power production. For validation and as a baseline rotor, the NREL Phase VI wind turbine rotor blade is used. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved and different turbulence models including the Spalart-Allmaras, k-e Launder-Sharma, k-e Yang-Shih and SST k-ω models are used and tested. The results of the power curve and the pressure distribution at different spanwise sections of the blade are in good agreement with the experimental data especially for the k-e Launder-Sharma. In the winglet design, the variable parameters are the cant and twist angles of the winglet. Multipoint optimization is carried out for three different operating wind speeds and 24 samples are obtained for each one. The final optimized winglet showed around 9% increase in the power production.

Design and performance analysis of double-flux supersonic air ejector
Bozkır, Berk; Alemdaroğlu, Hüseyin Nafiz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2018)
The main purpose of this study is to design a double-flux supersonic ejector and to evaluate its performance associated with its entrainment ratio by employing Computational Fluid Dynamics methods as well as one-dimensional approach. Since the performance of the ejector systems is strongly dependent on the design, this study concentrates on maximizing the entrainment ratio by varying the corresponding angles and the lengths of the critical segments such as mixing angle, divergence angle, mixing throat lengt...
Application of spring analogy mesh deformation technique in airfoil design optimization
Yang, Yosheph; Özgen, Serkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
In this thesis, an airfoil design optimization with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis combined with mesh deformation method is elaborated in detail. The mesh deformation technique is conducted based on spring analogy method. Several improvements and modifications are addressed during the implementation of this method. These enhancements are made so that good quality of the mesh can still be maintained and robustness of the solution can be achieved. The capability of mesh deformation is verified by...
Implementation of turbulence models on 2d hybrid grids using an explicit/implicit multigrid algorithm
Yılmaz, Ali Emre; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2011)
In this thesis study, implementation, numerical stability and convergence rate issues of turbulence modeling are explored. For this purpose, a one equation turbulence model, Spalart-Allmaras, and a two-equation turbulence model, SST k-w, are adapted to an explicit, cell centered, finite volume method based, structured / hybrid multi grid flow solver, SENSE2D, developed at TUBITAK-SAGE. Governing equations for both the flow and the turbulence are solved in a loosely coupled manner, however, each set of equat...
Design and performance analysis of a pump-turbine system using computational fluid dynamics
Yıldız, Mehmet; Albayrak, Kahraman; Çelebioğlu, Kutay; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
In this thesis, a parametric methodology is investigated to design a Pump-Turbine system using Computational Fluid Dynamics ( CFD ). The parts of Pump-Turbine are created parametrically according to the experience curves and theoretical design methods. Then, these parts are modified to obtain 500 kW turbine working as a pump with 28.15 meters head. The final design of Pump-Turbine parts are obtained by adjusting parameters according to the results of the CFD simulations. The designed parts of the Pump-Turbi...
