Future mobility is an area which requires exploration for both academic and business purposes. Technological developments such as electrified vehicles (EV), sharing services and autonomous vehicles (AV) have started taking their places in the transportation industry. AVs’ presence on the roads is expected in near future. There are predictions on how and when AVs are going to be eligible and uncertainties about how AVs will change people’s transportation habits and lifestyles. This thesis investigates future mobility and transportation design through the existence of AVs. Hence, the study aims to further investigate this issue using design fiction methodology by creating fictional storyworlds. For this purpose, two design fiction workshops were organized with designers to speculate on a fictional world and then, build design scenarios on this world where AVs would become a part of daily life. The study also provides insights on design fiction methodology by pointing out how designers speculate on the features of AVs within future storyworlds. As a result, the narratives and scenarios created by designers were analyzed and characteristics of the scenarios were identified considering the social and contextual aspects of the storyworlds. Moreover, there were design considerations for AVs stated by participants. Along with that, the workshop format was discussed with regards to how participants responded to the workshop activities and subsequently, the strategies they adopted were extracted.

Modelling an architectural design process
Şahinler, Kubilay; Sorguç, Arzu; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2022-2-02)
Architecture is influenced by developing technologies as well as by political, social, and economic practices. In this context, the scope of architectural service also evolves. Accordingly, different studies are carried out on the execution of the design process with different methodologies. In the building design process, various models are proposed and discussed, in which the role of the architect is questioned. In this context, this research includes a series of model suggestions aimed at making the arch...
Planning for a successful development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in Turkey

Since 1990s, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has been an area of research and implementation following the rapid development in communication and computational fields of research, which has always taken advantage of advances to promote mobility, efficiency and safety in transportation systems. The last two decades ofexperience in mostly the developed countries, the accumulation of knowledge and experience on ITS enabled the discussions on how to evaluate ...
Opportunities to engage in STEM practices: Technology and design course
Ubuz, Behiye (null; 2019-12-03)
Technology and design courses hold a potential to contribute to the STEM agenda. In this study I seek to explore the nature of STEM education across the courses, particularly examining 7 th grade intended curriculum in Turkey in terms of engineering design process and knowledge base. By extensive examination and coding of learning outcomes together with explanation provided under each one I identified instances of engineering design process and knowledge by learning areas. 52 learning outcomes (27 with emph...
Sustainability as an Educational Concern: A Study on Industrial Design Curricula
Turhan, Senem (null; 2009-04-09)
With the emergence of sustainability, it became an important concern for curricula of industrial design education as for many other educational structures. Currently, lots of higher education institutions offer courses focusing on sustainability for various objectives. This study deals with the current situation of industrial design education in the world by means of sustainability as an educational concern. It starts with the examination of a variety of sustainable development definitions and continues wi...
Exploring futures with world building in design education: building and applying a theoretical model through action research
Çağlar, Emre; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2021-2-12)
Design students are often engaged with future contexts, as design education encourages them to explore different contexts and understand the implications of their activities. These explorations are done in what is called a fuzzy front-end in design, which stands for the chaotic but fruitful early phase of a design process. There are different apporaches used by design students to conduct research and increase immersion into the context in this phase. Approaches such as design scenarios, make use of fictiona...
