This chapter argues that the history of penal law in colonial Algeria may be divided in three eras: the military conquest, the settlers’ rule, and the war of independence. To each of these eras corresponds vastly different situations of power relations and levels of effective colonial control, and consequently, different penal legal regimes. In a double movement, this research examines how both the ideological situation in the metropolis and power relations within colonial society (i.e. between settlers and colonized, but also between settlers and the State) affected the transformation of colonial penal law, and how in turn, these successive legal regimes affected social relations, the organization of consent and resistance in the colony, as well as the management of violence. @font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:roman; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-unhide:no; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman",serif; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";}.MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; mso-default-props:yes; font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;}div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;}

THE 'CELALI EFFECT' ON RURAL PRODUCTION AND DEMOGRAPHY IN CENTRAL ANATOLIA THE WAQF OF HATUNIYYE (1590s TO 1638)
Orbay, Kayhan (Akademiai Kiado Zrt., 2018-03-01)
The Celali rebel armies ravaged the central Anatolian countryside from the late 16th up to the mid-17th century. The Celali movements brought about demographic changes and had a long-lasting impact on agricultural economy in some regions. Anatolian waqf institutions being dependent on rural taxpayers and agricultural production for their budgets were seriously harmed by the Celali rebellions. This paper examines the Celali effect through the Waqf of Hatuniyye which had villages scattered across central Anat...

In this thesis, the effects of Celali Revolts are examined concentrating especially on demogr...
The Challenges to French Colonial Rule in Tunisia: Realpolitik in Mediterranean
Çoban, Mehmet İlbey (2021-12-01)
This research posits the dynamics behind impediments over the French colonial rule over Tunisia in the context of International Relations discipline. In doing so, anarchy notion will be beneficial for explaining the dynamics in the area; main assumptions of this research regard actors that pursues their self-interests in order to maintain their security, and gain power under the anarchic structure. This structure “acts as a constraining and disposing force” in the relations among states. On the other hand, ...
The impact of the Balkan Wars on Ottoman history writing Searching for a soul
Boyar, Ebru (Informa UK Limited, 2014-01-01)
Based on histories, accounts and articles published after the Balkan Wars, this article argues that, contrary to the commonly accepted thesis, the Balkan Wars did notmark the point at which Turkism became the dominant state ideology. There was in fact no clear-cut and definite shift toward Turkism at this point. Instead there was an increasing awareness of the need for a 'common soul' that would unite the population of the empire in the face of dramatic challenges such as the Balkan Wars
A socio-spatial approach to the question of class and consciousness formation in a local setting: the case of Bursa industrial workers
Büyükakça, Murat Çınar; Soykut, Mustafa; Department of History (2007)
This thesis attempts to challenge the way military historiography deals with the state of the Ottoman army between 1683 and 1792 and the military reform attempts prior to the Nizam-ı Cedid army. Western military historians have ascribed to the inferiority of the Ottoman military technology the waning of the Ottoman military power in the post-1683 period. Any attempt at reform was allegedly obstructed by religious reaction against borrowing European methods and technology. This thesis argues that technology ...
