Building collapse envelopes are simple yet reliable data representations used for depicting load-carrying and deformation capacities of reinforced concrete buildings and the relationship of these two types of performance-related quantities. These envelopes exhibit variations when structural parameters of the buildings they represent are tweaked. This study is intended to investigate the influence of reinforced concrete column details on building collapse envelopes. Numerical models of two five-story residential buildings light-to-moderately damaged and under the risk of progressive collapse after an earthquake event are created, and variants of these models are prepared by changing compressive concrete strength, floor number, stirrup spacing and longitudinal steel reinforcement ratio values. Results obtained by the analyses of these models are employed to construct corresponding building collapse envelopes. These envelopes are compared among themselves to examine the impacts of introduced parameter changes. Comparisons revealed that the four groups of parameters tested with the analyses of variants introduce consistent impacts to building collapse envelopes and these impacts could be further investigated for improving available reinforced concrete column design and assessment procedures.

Seismic upgrading of reinforced concrete frames with structural steel elements
Özçelik, Ramazan; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
This thesis examines the seismic internal retrofitting of existing deficient reinforced concrete (RC) structures by using structural steel members. Both experimental and numerical studies were performed. The strengthening methods utilized with the scope of this work are chevron braces, internal steel frames (ISFs), X-braces and column with shear plate. For this purpose, thirteen strengthened and two as built reference one bay one story portal frame specimens having 1/3 scales were tested under constant grav...
Influence of the shear wall area to floor area ratio on the seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete buildings
Günel, Ahmet Orhun; Burak Bakır, Burcu; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
An analytical study is performed to evaluate the influence of shear wall area to floor area ratio on the behavior of existing mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings under earthquake loading. The seismic performance of five existing school buildings with shear wall ratios between 0.00% and 2.50% in both longitudinal and transverse directions and their strengthened counterparts are evaluated. Based on the structural properties of the existing buildings, additional buildings with varying shear wall ratios are ...
Evaluation of shear wall indexes for reinforced concrete buildings
Soydaş, Ozan; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
An analytical study was carried out to evaluate shear wall indexes for low to mid-rise reinforced concrete structures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different shear wall ratios on performance of buildings to be utilized in the preliminary assessment and design stages of reinforced concrete buildings with shear walls. In order to achieve this aim, forty five 3D building models with two, five and eight storeys having different wall ratios were generated. Linearly elastic and nonlinear st...
Nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete frame structures
Çiftçi, Güçlü Koray; Polat, Mustafa Uğur; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Reinforced concrete frames display nonlinear behavior both due to its composite nature and the material properties of concrete itself. The yielding of the reinforcement, the non-uniform distribution of aggregates and the development of cracks under loading are the main reasons of nonlinearity. The stiffness of a frame element depends on the combination of the modulus of elasticity and the geometric properties of its section - area and the moment of inertia. In practice, the elastic modulus is assumed to be ...
Effect of cyclic thermal loading on the performance of steel H-piles in integral bridges with stub-abutments
Dicleli, Murat (Elsevier BV, 2004-02-01)
In this paper, analytical equations are developed to estimate the lateral displacement capacity of steel-H piles in integral bridges with stub abutments subjected to cyclic thermal variations. First, steel H piles that are capable of sustaining large plastic deformations are identified based on their local buckling strength. The normalized moment-curvature relationships of these piles are then obtained for various axial load levels. Next, a low-cycle fatigue damage model is employed to determine the maximum...
