Copyright © 2014 by ASME.The focus of this paper was to investigate the effects of microvoid content in quartz/BMI laminates on both short and long-term moisture absorption dynamics. The moisture absorption characteristics for the laminates were experimentally obtained by water immersion tests at 25°C of three-ply quartz/BMI samples that contain voids, ranging from 8.6% to 13.7% by volume. The void levels were obtained by conditioning the prepreg at different moisture levels for 48 hours in an environmental chamber before curing in a hot press. The curing process was carried out at 69 kPa, which leads to a more uniform fiber volume fraction for the laminates. Having a constant fiber volume fraction ensures the same amount of fiber-matrix interface present in all the test samples, therefore eliminating the effect of fiber-matrix interface as an experimental variable. It is shown that the presence of microvoids leads to an increased non-Fickian absorption behavior. Hence, the anomalous, non-Fickian absorption parameters are obtained by using a one-dimensional absorption model that accounts for both bound and unbound free water within the laminate. It is shown that the microvoids act as storage sites for moisture which can be described by the one-dimensional, non-Fickian absorption model. Finally, possible relationships between the four absorption model parameters and the process-induced microvoid content are discussed.

Effects of Solvents on Dissolution of Photoresist in Parylene Microchannels
Koydemir, Hatice Ceylan; Külah, Haluk; Özgen, Canan; Tosun, İsmail (2012-06-21)
This paper presents a study for the effects of different types of solvents on dissolution of photo resist inside the parylene micro channels. Theoretical and experimental studies were carried out to model the dynamic behavior of the dissolution. In this account, dissolution rate expressions were derived by taking into account the reaction of resist with the solvent. Micro channels with a cross section of 15 mu m x 50 mu m were fabricated by encapsulating photo resist inside the parylene layers and using gla...
Effect of fiber and resin types on mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composite pipe
Gokce, Neslihan; Yılmazer, Ülkü; SUBAŞI, SERKAN (Thomas Telford Ltd., 2019-09-01)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the types of fiber and resin on the mechanical properties of polyester composite pipes. Orthophthalic, isophthalic and vinyl ester resins were used as the matrix; E-glass, electrical/chemical resistance (ECR)-glass and basalt fibers were used as reinforcement; and 98% silica (SiO2) sand was used as filler in mixtures. Samples were produced by the centrifugal casting method. Samples cut from the produced pipes were tested to determine stiffness and longitu...
Effect of Presoaked Expanded Perlite Aggregate on the Dimensional Stability and Mechanical Properties of Engineered Cementitious Composites
KESKİN, SÜLEYMAN BAHADIR; Sulaiman, Kamaran; Sahmaran, Mustafa; Yaman, İsmail Özgür (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2013-06-01)
This paper reports on an investigation of the use of expanded perlite aggregate as saturated lightweight aggregate (LWA) with respect to the mechanical and dimensional stability properties of engineered cemetitious composites (ECC). Expanded perlite aggregate was soaked in water for 24 h before its use in ECC, and replaced 10, 20, and 30% of the aggregate that was used in ECC production. The mixture proportion of a standard ECC mixture with properties that have been extensively reported in the literature is...
Effect of molecular and electronic structure on the light-harvesting properties of dye sensitizers
Mete, E.; Üner, Deniz; Cakmak, M.; Gulseren, O.; Ellialtoglu, S. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2007-05-24)
The systematic trends in structural and electronic properties of perylenediimide (PDI)-derived dye molecules have been investigated by DFT calculations based on the projector-augmented wave (PAW) method including gradient-corrected exchange-correlation effects. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations have been performed to study the visible absorbance activity of these complexes. The effect of different ligands and halogen atoms attached to PDI were studied to characterize the light-ha...
Effect of clay pretreatment on photofermentative hydrogen production from olive mill wastewater
Eroglu, Ela; Eroglu, Inci; Gündüz, Ufuk; Yuecel, Meral (2008-10-01)
The aim of this paper was to gain further insight into the effect of the clay pretreatment process oil photofermentative hydrogen production. This two-stage process involved a clay pretreatment step followed by photofermentation. which was performed under anaerobic conditions with the illumination by Tungsten lamps. Rhodobacter sphaeroUts O.U.001 was used for photofermentation. Higher amounts of color (65%), total phenol (81%) and chemical oxygen demand (3%) removal efficiencies were achieved after clay pre...
