In order to address this problem in teaching SSI, this study is designed to understand and describe the experiences of a science teacher and a social studies teacher, who collaboratively designed and taught an SSI-based environmental ethics class. Research Methods: The purpose of this descriptive case study was to portray how a science and a social studies teacher co-design and co-teach an environmental ethics class. The data collection instruments were interviews, observations, and reflective journals. Thematic analysis of the data was made via a qualitative data analysis software. Findings: The findings indicated that both participants criticized the science curriculum for not being able to address every dimension of SSI. Therefore, they structured their environmental ethics class based on the “triple bottom idea” in order to look at those issues from social, economic, and environmental points of view. One of the highlights of their environmental ethics class was the opportunity given to the students to work on projects they felt passionate about. The participants described their role in the environmental ethics class as a consultant, which was different from traditional settings. Therefore, they no longer provided the content, but rather consulted with their students to explore their vested interests. Implications for Research and Practice: Giving students power to choose their own project topics, the teachers aimed at enhancing the motivation of students in taking pro-environmental actions, as well as developing their own perspective about controversial SSI. Considering the community involvement of the students, this missing piece of students’ community involvement and agency in most educational settings was strongly present in the environmental ethics class.

All rights reserved.Problem Statement: Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education aims at improving students’ knowledge and skills in science and math, and thus their attitudes and career choices in these areas. The ultimate goal in STEM education is to create scientifically literate individuals who can survive in the global economy. The identification of new learning outcomes, curriculum programs, and teaching practices needs to be clarified by the STEM educati...
DFT study for the mechanical and electronic properties of Mg3BHx (x=l,4,7) compounds for hydrogen storage applications
Gencer, A.; Sürücü, Gökhan (2019-11-25)
© 2019 Author(s).The electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops etc. are a necessary part of our daily life that requires portable power sources. Hydrogen being the most abundant element on the Earth, is an excellent energy carrier with high energy capacity that enable to use hydrogen storage methods in portable power sources. In addition, hydrogen storage could be essential to store the energy obtained from the renewable energy sources. The solid state hydrogen storage is an encouraging method for hyd...
Final results on neutrino oscillation parameters from the OPERA experiment in the CNGS beam

© 2019 authors. Published by the American Physical Society. The OPERA experiment has conclusively observed the appearance of tau neutrinos in the muon neutrino CNGS beam. Exploiting the OPERA detector capabilities, it was possible to isolate high purity samples of νe, νμ and ντ charged current weak neutrino interactions, as well as neutral current weak interactions. In this paper, the full dataset is used for the first time to test the three-flavor neutrino oscillation model and to derive constraints on the ...

© 2019 Author(s).Application of natural fibers in polymer composites has been gaining popularity in several industries pursuing environmentally friendly products. Among the natural fibers with proven potential applications, silk fibers have recently received considerable attention from researchers. Silk fibers provide higher mechanical properties compared to other commonly used natural fibers such as sisal, jute, and hemp. Silk may also exhibit comparable specific mechanical properties to glass fibers. Howe...
