Pinecone-derived activated carbon (AC) and bimetallic transition metal phosphide (TMP) composites were produced and utilized as electrochemical capacitor (EC) electrodes and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in this study. The base transition metal (TM) was Ni for all samples, and the secondary TM was one of Fe, Mn and Co. AC serves as a porous structure for double layer formation and active sites for OER catalysis. Bimetallic TMP is utilized due to redox reactions in EC and catalytic activity in OER. It is ascertained that secondary TM affects both EC and OER catalysis properties since they introduce multiple redox sites and alter the electronic configuration. As a result, Co is found to be beneficial for EC applications as a secondary TM, while Fe and Mn are shown to improve OER catalysis performance significantly. NiFeP and NiMnP-based composite have 44 mV/dec Tafel slopes and 313 and 316 mV overpotentials, respectively.

Development of Ru0/MO2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Ce) catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting
Demir, Elif; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; Department of Chemistry (2017)
In this study, Ru0/MO2 catalysts were prepared by reduction of ruthenium(III) chloride on different types of metal oxides, which were TiO2, ZrO2, CeO2 and HfO2, then catalysts were loaded on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes at same mass loading level, and used as electrocatalysts in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Characterization of prepared catalysts were done by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and X...
Application of semi conductor films over glass/ceramic surfaces and their low temperature photocatalytic activity
Ersöz, Tuğçe İrfan; Karakaş, Gürkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2009)
Semiconductor metal oxides can be induced by light with proper wavelength resulting in oxidation and reduction reactions for the transformation of water and oxygen molecules into active radicals. With this method, it is possible to obtain self-cleaning surfaces and products having antimicrobial properties. The aim of this study is to develop semiconductor metal oxide thin films for multifunctional glass products and the characterization of photocatalytic self cleaning and antimicrobial properties. As semico...
Design of Carbon Nanotube Modified Conducting Polymer for Biosensing Applications
Ozdemir, Caglar; Tuncagil, Sevinc; ODACI DEMİRKOL, DİLEK; TİMUR, SUNA; Toppare, Levent Kamil (2011-01-01)
An electrochemical biosensor with improved performance was designed through the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) onto conducting polymer of 4-(2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)benzenamine (SNS-NH2) modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). For the optimization and characterization of the biosensor, pH profile, enzyme loading, reproducibility, operational stability experiments were carried out. It was found that the use of CNTs in a biosensing system enhanced the biosensor response. The linear relati...
Enhancement in Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity of Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanostructures in Acidic Media through Chloride-Ion Exposure
Jain, Deeksha; Mamtani, Kuldeep; Gustin, Vance; Gunduz, Seval; Çelik, Gökhan; Waluyo, Iradwikanari; Hunt, Adrian; Co, Anne C.; Ozkan, Umit S. (2018-07-11)
Nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructures (CNx) are promising cathode materials as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Incorporation of chlorine into CNx catalysts using a facile methodology can lead to a significant improvement in the ORR activity in acidic media, as confirmed by electrochemical half-cell measurements. The chlorine-containing CNx catalyst (CNx-Cl) is synthesized by soaking CNx powder in 0.3 M HCl. The analysis of near-edge X-ray ab...
Development of polybenzimidazole/graphene oxide composite membranes for high temperature PEM fuel cells
Uregen, Nurhan; Pehlivanoglu, Kubra; Ozdemir, Yagmur; DEVRİM, YILSER (2017-01-26)
In this study, phosphoric acid doped Polybenzimidazole/Graphene Oxide (PBI/GO) nano composite membranes were prepared by dispersion of various amounts of GO in PBI polymer matrix followed by phosphoric acid doping for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) application. The structure of the PBI/GO composite membranes was investigated by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The introduction of GO into the FBI polymer matri...
