ADAPTING COURSEBOOKS: WHAT, WHY, WHEN, & HOW TO ADAPT?

2022-09-01
In this chapter, the author concentrates on the use of materials after the coursebook selection process focusing on two aspects: (1) adapting the selected material through various techniques or methodological decisions, and (2) designing new materials to supplement or expand the selected coursebook. The decision about materials adaptation and design depends on the context of language teaching, needs of the learners, and realities of the classroom; therefore, the chapter also provides (i) problematic cases where an adaptation is required, (ii) real teacher-made materials designed to be used for specific learner groups, and (iii) suggestions for integrating authenticity into materials development.

Design for the Next: Integration of Path to Sustained Usage Model into Design Process
Karahanoğlu, Armağan; Bakırlıoğlu, Yekta (2017-10-18)
The aim of this chapter is to evaluate and further discuss the integration of the “Path to Sustained Usage” model into design process. To achieve this, this chapter explains the details and the outcomes of Engage! Workshop in which the model was tested with “backwards-designing” approach. The paper ends with further suggestions for application of the model into design process.
CALCULATION OF THE PHASE DIAGRAMS FOR THE FLUID-SOLID AND SOLID-SOLID (delta-delta(loc)-epsilon) TRANSITIONS IN MOLECULAR NITROGEN BY USING MEAN FIELD MODEL
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (Romanian Academy - Revue Roumaine De Chimie, 2019-03-01)
The temperature-pressure (T-P) phase diagrams are calculated using the mean field models for the solid-fluid (first order) and, the solid-solid transitions of the delta-delta(loc) (second order) and delta(loc)-epsilon (first order) in nitrogen. By expanding the free energy in terms of the order parameters, the phase line equations are derived and they are fitted to the experimental data from the literature for this molecular crystal. For the fitting procedure, the coefficients in the free energy expansion a...
Representations of Performative Architecture in Design Synthesis
Ataman, Cem; Gürsel Dino, İpek (2019-04-11)
The design process covers the entire sequence of design activities and includes individual loops of briefing, analysis and synthesis within evaluation and decision making. The development of computer tools that support design synthesis are especially significant for connecting different study fields, which is essential in performative building design. Computational design synthesis includes four major activities as Cagan (2005) states, which are representation, generation, evaluation and guidance in perform...
Expanding architecture; a proposal for a multi - functional hall at METU
Turgutoğlu, Burak; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2003)
Standardization, flexibility and transparency had been the eminent keywords of Modern Architecture that have also provided material for the re-interpretation and re-production of several discussions on concepts like ءform̕ and ءfunction̕ in architecture. This study is an inquiry into a number of different interpretations that scrutinize the intricate relationship between architectural form and function in the 20th century with respect to the concepts defined above. The conceptualization of this thesis will ...
Adaptability of generative algorithms: a means to sustaining the dynamic design processes
Damdere, Ekin; Özkar, Mine; Department of Architecture (2010)
This thesis is an investigation focusing on the adaptability of generative systems in a dynamic design problem, where the problem definition changes according to the changing conditions of the environment and transforming needs of the architectural space. This thesis, instead of discussing the dynamicity of the design processes, investigates the use of an adaptable generative system in a case-specific dynamic design problem to sustain its changing problem definitions. The research mainly looks into the pote...
