Generally, a vertical alignment performed by even an experienced designer and conforming to the specifications is sub-optimum unless it has been modified properly to minimise the earthwork cost. This paper proposes use of the mesh adaptive direct search approach to establish a nearly optimum vertical alignment based on a designer's alignment by moving points of vertical intersections. The method is applied during the design process in a building information modelling environment by a module developed and integrated in AutoCAD Civil 3D software, the aims being to increase the applicability of the method and obtain accurate earthwork volumes. The numerical results showed earthwork costs reduced by as much as 27% by slight adjustments to the vertical alignments of three virtual roads and a real highway project. According to the results, applying the method practically in the design process could save millions in various highway projects.

Optimization of highway vertical alignment by direct search technique
Özkan, Eray; Acar, Soner Osman; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
During initial stages of geometric design of highway projects, generally a number of alternative horizontal alignments are developed. For any selected alternative horizontal alignment, the basic features of the geometric design are to be completed by establishing the vertical alignment of the roadway. Since for a given horizontal alignment there would be infinite number of vertical alignments conforming to the specifications, it is essential to use an optimization process in order to achieve the most econom...
Inverse airfoil design using the Navier-stokes equations
Eyi, Sinan (null; 1993-01-01)
The feasibility of the use of the Navier-Stokes equations in aerodynamic design is examined. The Navier-Stokes equations can include the rotational viscous physics at transonic speeds, and hence are expected to produce more reliable design. The target pressure is specified and a least- square optimization is used to minimize the pressure discrepancy between the target and designed airfoils. The sensitivity analysis which determines the response of the flow to a geometry perturbation is performed based on a ...
Analytical Fragility Curves for Ordinary Highway Bridges in Turkey
AVŞAR, ÖZGÜR; Yakut, Ahmet; Caner, Alp (SAGE Publications, 2011-11-01)
This study focuses on the development of analytical fragility curves for the ordinary highway bridges constructed after the 1990s. Four major bridge classes were employed based on skew angle, number of columns per bent, and span number (only multispan bridges). Nonlinear response-history analyses (NRHA) were conducted for each bridge sample using a detailed 3-D analytical model subjected to earthquake ground motions of varying seismic intensities. A component-based approach that uses several engineering dem...
Spatial analysis of two-wheeled vehicles traffic crashes: Osmaniye in Turkey
YALÇIN, GÜLER; Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem (2015-11-01)
To achieve a sustainable traffic management and sustainable transportation planning in urban areas one of the tools that can be used effectively is Geographic Information Systems. In Turkey Transportation Department under Civil Engineering deals with roads and railways which are open to public such as inner city and outer city traffic arrangements with General Directorate of Security. This paper aims to analyze road traffic accident distribution according to the vehicle types involved in the accidents for u...
Cost estimation of trackworks of light rail and metro projects
Öztürk, Erhan; Gündüz, Murat; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
The main objective of this work is to develop models using multivariable regression and artificial neural network approaches for cost estimation of the construction costs of trackworks of light rail transit and metro projects at the early stages of the construction process in Turkey. These two approaches were applied to a data set of 16 projects by using seventeen parameters available at the early design phase. According to the results of each method, regression analysis estimated the cost of testing sample...
