© 2021 URSI.We present design and simulation of three-dimensional shell structures with near-zero-index (NZI) characteristics that generate directive radiation patterns from isotropic sources. Both homogenized and actual models involving periodic arrangements of unit cells are investigated via accurate solvers based on surface integral equations. Geometric properties of the shells are studied for the purpose of high-quality beams and favorable radiation patterns, such as low side-lobe levels. Various strategies to enhance or suppress selected beams to form alternative beam configurations are also discussed to demonstrate extensive capabilities of NZI shells for diverse applications.

Design and simulation of nana-optical beam generators based on zero-index materials
Eris, Ozgur; Abanuzoglu, Tutku; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2019-09-01)
We present design and computational analysis of near-zero-index (NZI) structures that act as nano-optical beam generators when excited internally by isotropic sources. The designed structures have homogenized shell geometries with various modifications to generate asymmetric tridirectional, bidirectional, and unidirectional beams, in addition to symmetric ones. NZI properties make it possible to generate beams from planar surfaces, while numerical results show that the behavior of a shell is very sensitive ...
Design, simulation, and measurement of near-zero-index shells for electromagnetic beam generation
Eriş, Özgür; Ergül, Özgür Salih; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2021-9-06)
In this study, design and simulation of three-dimensional (3D) shell structures, which generate directional radiation patterns from isotropic sources, with near-zero-index (NZI) characteristics, as well as their realizations via low-cost 3D printing are presented. Throughout the design process of NZI beam generators, both homogenized structures, in which near-zero relative permittivity and/or permeability values are enforced, and actual models involving periodic arrangements of dielectric rods are examined....
DESIGN AND SIMULATION OF CIRCULAR ARRAYS OF TRAPEZOIDAL-TOOTH LOG-PERIODIC ANTENNAS VIA GENETIC OPTIMIZATION
Gurel, L.; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2008-01-01)
Circular arrays of log-periodic (LP) antennas are designed and their operational properties are investigated in a sophisticated simulation environment that is based on the recent advances in computational electromagnetics. Due to the complicated structures of the trapezoidal-tooth array elements and the overall array configuration, their analytical treatments are prohibitively difficult. Therefore, the simulation results presented in this paper are essential for their analysis and design. We present the des...
Design, Modelling and Analysis of Morphing Airfoils
Köksal, Buğra; Şahin, Melin; Uzol, Oğuz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2023-1)
This study presents the design, finite element (FE) modeling and analysis of a morphing airfoil using pressure-actuated cell structures. It is aimed that the selected baseline airfoil should be capable of changing its profile to morph into a target airfoil profile. To achieve this goal, first, a NACA 0012 airfoil with a 500 mm chord and 8 mm x 8 mm outer cross-section is obtained in Altair® HyperWorks environment as a baseline airfoil. Following this, the cell actuators responsible for morphing are designed...
Development of a shell finite element for large deformation analysis of laminated composites
Yıldız, Tuba; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
The objective of the present work is to investigate the behavior of laminated fiber -reinforced polymer matrix composite shell structures under bending load with the help of a modified finite element computer code which was previously developed for the analysis of pseudo-layered single material shells. The laminates are assumed to be orthotropic and the formulation is adapted to first order shear deformation theory. The aim is to determine the large deformation characteristics numerically, and to predict th...
