Visuals and visualization techniques are essential in urban design. They are used for expressing the things that are seen or conveying thoughts. They are also an essential part of understanding and experiencing space in design disciplines. This study aims to use observational sketching and photographs as two tools for experiencing places, evaluate them as an on-site data collection method, and compare the advantages and disadvantages of these methods based on their effect on perception, contribution to the diversity of representation and quick documentation of the urban environments. To this end, the researcher asked two questions: (1) What advantages and disadvantages do designers see in using observational sketching and digital photography while experiencing places? (2) Do the professional background of designers and their past drawing or photography training make any difference in the way they assess these two techniques? In order to respond these questions, the author conducted a field study in the Ankara Castle region with a number of designers and then asked them to participate in interview research. Key findings show that on-site drawing is a suitable method for experiencing the place, and it has different advantages and disadvantages when compared to the photographing method in different cases. It is possible to conclude that using these two methods together can be the most effective method in the field experience and on-site data collection method due to the fieldwork and interviews. The findings were discussed in detail in the study. It should be emphasized that it is essential to see these results as a method of experiencing the place, especially for students and junior urban designers.

The architectural city images in cinema: the representation of city in renaissance as a case study
Akçay, Ayşegül; Güzer, Celal Abdi; Department of Architecture (2008)
The aim of this study is to understand the limits of spatial transformations of architectural images in cinema. In this exposition the architectural city images are analyzed with referenced to case study by reading the representation of space and city in model film Renaissance which in the city becomes notion. The interaction between architecture and cinema is discussed by using concepts such as space, time, perception, framing, editing and continuity in addition to their relations with future cities and sp...
Kentsel Dokuların Dolaşım Sistemlerinin İşleyişindeki Rolü
Zorlu, Fikret (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2008)
Biomechanical modelling of the interphalangeal joints of the human hand
Yatağan, Koray Melih; Tönük, Ergin; Leblebicioğlu, Gürsel; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2021-7-15)
In this study, the development process of a 3D unconstrained model of the interphalangeal (IP) joints is presented. The model agrees with the experimental studies. It can explain the change in the axis of the IP joints, the non-linear relationship between the tendon excursion and the flexion angle, the coordination between the IP joints and the tendon forces corresponding to the flexion angle. Furthermore, some controversial topics in the literature are investigated using the model, and four theses are deve...
Dynamic voxelization to aid illumination of real-time scenes
Yalçıner, Bora; Sahillioğlu, Yusuf; Department of Game Technologies (2016)
In this thesis, we focus on approximating indirect illumination on real-time applications to visualize realistic scenes. In order to approximate indirect illumination we provide a fast sparse voxel tree structure for highly dynamic scenes. Our system tries to cover traditional real-time animation methods including dynamic non-deforming objects and objects that deform with bone transformations. The voxel scene data structure is designed for fully dynamic objects and eliminates the voxelization of the dynamic...
Video Content Analysis Method for Audiovisual Quality Assessment
Konuk, Baris; Zerman, Emin; NUR YILMAZ, GÖKÇE; Akar, Gözde (2016-06-08)
In this study a novel, spatio-temporal characteristics based video content analysis method is presented. The proposed method has been evaluated on different video quality assessment databases, which include videos with different characteristics and distortion types. Test results obtained on different databases demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of the proposed content analysis method. Moreover, this analysis method is employed in order to examine the performance improvement in audiovisual quality asses...
