Speculations on the city in architectural drawing: dogma as a contemporary critique

Karaköy, Nilay
Drawings have become a potential design tool in architecture, not limited to the representation of the object. Since they are more than representations of their objects, they become a conceptual model of reality rather than a reproduction. For this reason, the drawings are not limited to architectural objects, they are also related to the context in which the design is built, namely the city. Constructed with a particularly dense pattern of roads and buildings, the modern city has been an important part of architectural debates since the beginning of the twentieth century, thus becoming an inseparable object of architectural drawings. In addition, the diversity of techniques and mediums used to produce drawings has also influenced the way architects perceive and respond to urban conditions by reading, analyzing, decontextualizing and recontextualizing them. For this reason, the thesis focuses on representing architectural drawing as a project that explores the relationship between architecture and its other, the city, through a series of interdisciplinary conventions. To do this, a study is made of twentieth-century architectural drawings as a material expression which proposes a mental process of architectural creation, and a critical look at the existing city through the nature of its technical properties. Based on the work of the Dogma office, the thesis aims to present a critical view of today's concept of the city by the agency of drawing. Through an analysis of the drawings of Dogma, the role of architecture in understanding the contemporary city are evaluated to further elaborate the possibilities of architecture to propose an idea for the city.

Professionals such as product designers, architects, and engineers have an intrinsic relationship with drawing, using it to represent everything from the creative sketches of a proposal to its production. In this sense, technical drawing and sketching techniques are a relevant part of design education. In this context, this article presents an analysis of drawings developed by product design students from different countries working in the Global Studio 2018, an international interinstitutional project. In ...
Unfolding diagrams as generative design tools in architectural design process: united network (UN) Studio-Möbius House , Arnhem Central Station , Mercedes Benz Museum
Kuyumcu, Başak; Önür, Selahattin; Department of Architecture (2010)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the role of the diagrams as generative design tools in architectural design process. Identifying the utilization of the diagrams as infrastructural and organizational elements in the design process, it aims to be concentrate on their potency for generating novel design concepts. The search has been for the possibilities of design processes developed and manipulated not through analytical use of diagrams that represents the already established relationships but through th...
Analogical Models In Architecture And Urban Design
Abel, Chris (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 1988)
In an earlier article, "Function of Tacit Knowing in Learning to Design!' (Abel, 1981c), I suggested that design researchers need to pay more attention to the way architects actually create their designs, rather than relying on the idealized models of design processes dreamed up by themselves. This article is intended to help fill that need, and outlines the major types of analogical models used by architects, together with some straightforward explanations of the main concepts involved. The assumptive phil...
Analysis of Filmmaking Techniques for Architectural Animations
Alvarado, Rodrigo Garcia (2008-1-1)
Digital animation provides a new possibility to exhibit architectural projects, but it must address some features to properly show the building design. This paper exposes a review of diverse moving images presentation of architectural environments in order to identify principles to be considered when display building projects through digital animation. It studied scenes of twenty productions; eight famous movies from different ages, like examples of major filmmaking efforts; six documentaries of historical ...
The orthographic set: making architecture visible
Türkay, Seray; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2011)
The meaning of term “representation” has shifted in both relevancy and definition in the discipline of architecture with the introduction of computational design technologies. The assumption of this study is that the selected mode of representation has the power to affect the process of design and even the production of architecture. At the present time, while the discipline is witnessing a change in its tendencies and terminologies, such as from drawing to 3D modeling, from construction to fabrication, and...
