DETERMINATION OF UNSATURATED SOIL PROPERTIES FROM SIMPLIFIED EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES
Kenanoğlu, Melih Birhan; Toker, Nabi Kartal; Department of Civil Engineering (2023-1-27)
Unsaturated soil mechanics provides theoretical basis to researchers and practitioners for the solution of various geotechnical engineering problems. The implementation of developed theories and experimental techniques into engineering practice is, however, questionable. The development of simple and rapid experimental procedures that are compatible with existing theoretical models could be beneficial in this regard. In this study, a complete framework of practical procedures for obtaining unsaturated...
Modeling and experimental evaluation of variable speed pump and valve controlled hydraulic servo drives
Çalışkan, Hakan; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
In this thesis study, a valveless hydraulic servo system controlled by two pumps is investigated and its performance characteristics are compared with a conventional valve controlled system both experimentally and analytically. The two control techniques are applied on the position control of a single rod linear actuator. In the valve controlled system, the flow rate through the actuator is regulated with a servovalve; whereas in the pump controlled system, two variable speed pumps driven by servomotors reg...
Hydraulics of circular bottom intake orifices
Bulut, Muhammed; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
In this study, the hydraulics of circular bottom intake orifices was investigated experimentally in a hydraulic model constructed in the laboratory. For this reason, a series of circular orifices at various diameters were located at the bottom of a flume and tested under a wide range of different flow conditions. The discharge passing through the orifice of known diameter, location and slope were measured and recorded along with the corresponding flow rate of the main channel and its flow depth. One or some...
Laboratory investigation of hydraulic efficiency of transverse grates in roads
Özbey, Cumhur; Tiğrek, Şahnaz; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
In this study, hydraulic efficiency of transverse grated inlet systems to be used in small roads is experimentally investigated. For this purpose, an existing experimental setup in the Hydromechanics Laboratory of METU is utilized. Three sets of experiments are conducted in order to examine the relationship between the total flow rate and the grate efficiency with respect to several parameters. In the first set, the interdependence of the void ratio and grate efficiency is investigated. In the second set of...
Incompressible flow simulations using least squares spectral element method on adaptively refined triangular grids
Akdağ, Osman; Sert, Cüneyt; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
The main purpose of this study is to develop a flow solver that employs triangular grids to solve two-dimensional, viscous, laminar, steady, incompressible flows. The flow solver is based on Least Squares Spectral Element Method (LSSEM). It has p-type adaptive mesh refinement/coarsening capability and supports p-type nonconforming element interfaces. To validate the developed flow solver several benchmark problems are studied and successful results are obtained. The performances of two different triangular ...
