Due to ease of mounting, high strength feature and availability, bolted joints are one of the most common and widely used connection method. The contact between connected bodies is ensured by preload force on bolts which affect the stiffness and damping characteristics of the assembled system and introduce nonlinearity. To obtain the dynamic characteristic of systems with bolted joints accurately, the nonlinearity effect should be included. With high fidelity contact model’s accurate response can be obtained whereas the computational cost is drastically increased. The reduced-order modeling of bolted connections is essential to obtain the nonlinear dynamic response with adequate accuracy. The aim of the work represented in this thesis is to decrease the computational cost of the reduced contact model by utilizing modal superposition method with response-dependent nonlinear modes.

Nonlinear reduced order modeling of bolted joints

Most of the structural systems assembled by using bolted joints. Therefore, bolted joint models have a critical importance to estimate the behavior of the overall assembled system. There are several linear bolted joint models, which consist of spring and dashpot elements in literature. While they can estimate the resonant frequency of the overall system with a sufficient accuracy, linear bolted joint models are inadequate for approximating the damping, which arises from the friction in the contact interface...

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of an Asymmetric Ball Bearing Rotor System
Bahan, Doğancan; Ciğeroğlu, Ender (2019-11-14)
Performance of ball bearing–rotor systems are highly dependent on and often limited by characteristics of ball bearings. Several studies are available in the literature, investigating varying compliance and subharmonic resonances of ball bearings. Most of the studies are carried out with rigid rotors to focus on modelling of the bearings. There exist few studies which take flexibility of rotors into account. Furthermore, even if the rotor flexibility is modelled, most of the time symmetrical rotors are cons...
Multilayer Graphene Broadband Terahertz Modulators with Flexible Substrate
KAYA, Emine; Kakenov, Nurbek; Altan, Hakan; Kocabas, Coskun; Esentürk, Okan (2018-05-01)
Fabrication of terahertz modulators as simple devices with high modulation depth across a broad bandwidth is still very challenging. In this study, four different chemical vapor deposition grown multilayer graphene (MLG) modulators based on MLG/ionic liquid/gold sandwich structures have been investigated. Flexible substrates (PVC and PE) were chosen as host materials, and devices were fabricated with three different thicknesses. The resultant MLG devices can be operated at low voltages between 0 and 3.4 V p...
