I begin, haltingly, and the individual begins, for John Stuart Mill, with an impulse. My impulse, in terms of Mill, is to ask after power and energy in hisOn Liberty. There, impulses are desires and those of the “Strong” variety are synonymous with energy (Mill 2002, p. 62). An individual with their own impulses has character and one with strong impulses governed by a strong will has energetic character. One without them has no character. I begin haltingly, in part, because, insofar as my impulse is directed toward power and energy, I am unsure as to the will that may or may not govern it, whether this question reveals or begins to reveal something of my character, its degree of energy, or the lack thereof. What does it mean, in other words, to ask about power and energy in this book? Call this question the opening of an experiment in thinking.

Time as the ground of transcendence: a dialogue between Kant and Heidegger
Beşkardeşler, Sedef; Baç, Mutlu Murat; Department of Philosophy (2020)
In this dissertation, I attempt to present a critical dialogue between Immanuel Kant and Martin Heidegger in terms of time. Heidegger sees his own project of the interpretation of Critique of Pure Reason as a retrieval (Wiederholung) of the problem of the ground laying of metaphysics. I do aim at furthering the dialogue first by basing my reading on the way that Heidegger interprets Kant and second by tracing what Heidegger should have thought within the relevant context. In this regard, my project is to pu...
Psychic spaces in three plays by Samuel Beckettthe abjected semiotic intruding in to the symbolic
DEMİR, Betül; Sönmez, Margaret Jeanne M.; Department of English Literature (2021-3-04)
This thesis examines the intrusion of the abjected semiotic into the symbolic in Waiting for Godot, Endgame and Happy Daysby Samuel Beckett. A survey of studies in drama finds that the recent spatial turn has largely ignored spaces of drama, and that the current state of spatial criticism alone cannot adequately explain spaces in the drama of Beckett. Spatial binarism and the imagery of death, being relevant in these plays, are used as the initial steps for investigating psychic spatialityin the drama of Be...
Nietzsche’s influence on modernist bildungsroman: the immoralist, a portrait of the artist as a young man, and demian /
Başpınar, Harika; Alpakın Martınez Caro, Dürrin; Department of English Literature (2014)
This thesis carries out a comparative analysis of three modernist bildungsromans written by André Gide, James Joyce, and Hermann Hesse in the light of Nietzschean philosophy. The Immoralist (1902), A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), and Demian (1919) are all coming of age novels reflecting the zeitgeist of modern Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. It is argued that their protagonists are typical modernist characters who show a rebellious characteristic and strive for freedom and authe...
The outsiders as reflected in the novels of Albert Camus, John Wain and Yusuf Atilgan
Bay, Hatice; Coşkunoğlu Bear, Ayten; Department of English Literature (2008)
This thesis studies the alienated characters of Albert Camus’s The Outsider, John Wain’s Hurry On Down and Yusuf Atılgan’s Aylak Adam, respectively. It argues that each of the protagonists of these novels experiences alienation. That is, Camus’s character is an alienated man because he has the characteristics of an absurd man; Wain’s character is an estranged man due to his social discontentment and Atılgan’s C. is an outsider owing to his psychological problems. The works are analyzed with philosophical, s...
Labor, leisure and freedom in the philosophies of Aristotle, Karl Marx and Herbert Marcuse
Kılınç, Doğan Barış; Turan, Şeref Halil; Department of Philosophy (2006)
The aim of this study is to present an examination of the philosophies of Aristotle, Karl Marx and Herbert Marcuse concerning labor and leisure in the context of freedom. These philosophers have paid attention to the concepts labor and leisure; their view of freedom is dependent on the relationship they have established between labor and leisure. To this end, I firstly give a general overview of the concepts labor, leisure and freedom; afterwards, I try to show how these concepts have been considered in the...
