Optimum design of composite structures with curved fiber courses
Parnas, L; Oral, Süha; Ceyhan, U (2003-05-01)
In this study, a new methodology for the optimum design of laminated composites with curved fiber courses is presented. The objective of the optimization problem is to minimize the weight of the composite laminate under stress constraints. The Tsai-Hill criterion is employed on the first ply failure basis. Layer thicknesses and fiber angles are represented by bicubic Bezier surfaces and cubic Bezier curves, respectively. Design variables are coordinates of control points of the corresponding Bezier splines....
Optimum design of double-layer grid systems: comparison with current design practice using real-life industrial applications
Aydıncılar, Yılmaz; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Double-layer grid systems are three-dimensional pin-jointed structures, which are generally used for covering roofs having large spans. In this study, evolution strategies method is used to optimize space trusses. Evolution strategies method is a type of evolutionary algorithms, which simulate biological evolution and natural selection phenomenon to find the best solution for an optimization problem. In this method, an initial population is formed by various solutions of design problem. Then this initial po...
Optimum design of steel structures via differential evolution algorithm and application programming interface of SAP2000
Dedekargınoğlu, Özgür; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
The objective of this study is to investigate the use and efficiency of Differential Evolution (DE) method on structural optimization. The solution algorithm developed with DE is computerized into software called SOP2011 using VB.NET. SOP2011 is automated to achieve size optimum design of steel structures consisting of 1-D elements such as trusses and frames subjected to design provisions according to ASD-AISC (2010) and LRFD-AISC (2010). SOP2011 works simultaneously with the structural analysis and design ...
Optimum design of 3-d irregular steel frames using ant colony optimization and harmony search algorithms
Aydoğdu, İbrahim; Saka, Mehmet Polat; Tokdemir, Turgut; Department of Engineering Sciences (2010)
Steel space frames having irregular shapes when subjected to lateral loads caused by wind or earthquakes undergo twisting as a result of their unsymmetrical topology. As a result, torsional moment comes out which is required to be resisted by the three dimensional frame system. The members of such frame are generally made out of steel I sections which are thin walled open sections. The simple beam theory is not adequate to predict behavior of such thin-walled sections under torsional moments due to the fact...
Evolutionary topology optimization of a folding missile wing for stiffness and frequency
Ürün, Ata; Şahin, Melin; Gürses, Ercan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2023-1-25)
This thesis presents a study on the topology optimization of a folding wing structure for a cruise missile with the aim of minimizing the weight of the wing while maximizing its stiffness and/or maximizing the selected natural frequency values. The weight of the folding wing has a significant impact on the performance of the opening mechanism and the overall dynamic behavior of the missile. The Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method, a widely-used topology optimization technique, i...
