In order to elucidate the effects of NPY directly on bone tissue, two different doses of NPY (NPY dose 1= 1X10-5 M and NPY dose 2 = 1X 10?6 M) and NPY dose 2 plus its inhibitor were applied together with hyaluronic acid (HA) into the intramedullary area of right tibia of Wistar rats. HA alone was administered as the control group. On three time points, day one, week one and week two after administration, the tibiae were collected and stored at ?20oC for analysis. Evaluation was performed via conventional radiography, dual energy X-ray absorbtiometry (DEXA), quantitative computerized tomography (QCT), three point bending test (TPB) and histology techniques. QCT was used to assess both atomic content and density of both medulla and cortex of tibiae. From DEXA results, it was observed that inhibition of NPY causes an increase in the bone mass from first day to second week. This phenomena was also observed in histology results so that new bone formation in the inhibitor administered bone was encountered at week two. In both medulla and cortex areas? atomic content, an increase in average effective atomic number was displayed after administration of NPY plus NPY inhibitor throughout two weeks. In addition, density of medulla of tibiae measured by QCT also revealed an increase in bone mass when inhibitor is applied throughout two weeks. As a result, overall evaluation of data obtained from DEXA, QCT and histological analysis revealed that NPY inhibits bone formation or have a pro-osteoclastic effect; inversely HA displayed osteogenic effect.

Effect of arachidonic acid on specific binding of [H-3]naloxone to opioid receptors
Apaydin, S; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni (2000-01-01)
The effects of arachidonic acid (AA) on binding of [H-3]naloxone to the agonist and antagonist configurations of opioid receptors were investigated in rat brain. Equilibrium binding parameters of the agonist and antagonist configurations of the receptors were evaluated from homologue displacement data in the presence or absence of AA. Addition of AA at a concentration of 0.6 mM (1.5 mu mole/mg of protein) reduced by 22% and 53% the maximal number of binding sites (B-max) respectively in the absence or prese...
Effect of Cr and Mo doping on the electrochemical properties of freeze-dried LiCoO2
Buyukburc, Atil; Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri (2014-10-01)
In this study, LiCoO2 is doped with 2 mol.% Cr and Mo in order to determine the effect of these elements on the electrochemical performance. Precursors are synthesized by means of freeze drying. Calcination is applied at 750 degrees C for 24 h. Doping content and calcination temperature as well as duration are very important for producing impurity-free layered LiCoO2. If the doping content is larger than 2 mol.% or when the calcination temperature is decreased to 550 degrees C, impurity phases are seen. As ...
EFFECT OF TANNIC ACID ON GLUTATHIONE S-TRANSFERASE AND NAD(P)H: QUINONE OXIDOREDUCTASE 1 ENZYMES IN RABBIT LIVER AND KIDNEY
KARAKURT, SERDAR; Adalı, Orhan (2011-01-01)
Glutathione S-transferase and NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 enzymes have important roles in detoxification and also activation of a wide variety of chemicals. Moreover, resistance of tumor cells against chemotherapeutic agents has been implicated in GST activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polyphenolic compound tannic acid on rabbit liver and kidney glutathione S-transferase and NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 enzyme activities. Tannic acid was found to be a potent inhibi...
Effect of protein aggregation in the aqueous phase on the binding of membrane proteins to membranes
Doebler, R; Basaran, N; Goldston, H; Holloway, PW (Elsevier BV, 1999-02-01)
Analysis of the binding of hydrophobic peptides or proteins to membranes generally assumes that the solute is monomeric in both the aqueous phase and the membrane. Simulations were performed to examine the effect of solute self-association in the aqueous phase on the binding of monomeric solute to lipid vesicles. Aggregation lowered the initial concentration of monomeric solute, which was then maintained at a relatively constant value at the expense of the aggregated solute, as the lipid concentration was i...
