In this study, the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) blends prepared by Plasticorder Brabender were strengthened by adding Carbon Black (CB). Blends were prepared at 190 °C. Amounts of LDPE were changed to 30, 40, 50 and 60 percent by the volume and the percent amounts of CB were changed to 5, 10,15, 20 and 30 according to the total volume. Thermal and morphological properties were investigated by using Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Mechanical properties were investigated by tensile test and hardness measurements. Melt flow properties were studied by Melt Flow Index (MFI) measurements. Electrical conductivities were measured by four probe and two probe techniques. Temperature dependence of electrical conductivity was also studied. In general, it is observed that stress at break and MFI values decrease by the addition of CB; however, modulus and hardness increase. DSC results indicated that the crystallization of the polymer blend was decreased by the addition of CB. SEM results showed that the components were mixed homogenously. Increasing CB content increased electrical conductivity. Furthermore, by increasing the temperature, positive temperature coefficient behavior was observed which increases when CB content decreased.

Flame retardancy of polyamide compounds and micro/nano composites
Gündüz, Hüseyin Özgür; Kaynak, Cevdet; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
In the first part of this dissertation, glass fiber reinforced/unreinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyamide 66 (PA66) were compounded with three different flame retardants, which were melamine cyanurate, red phosphorus and brominated epoxy with antimony trioxide, by using an industrial scale twin screw extruder. Then, to investigate flame retardancy of these specimens, UL-94, Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) and Mass Loss Cone Calorimeter (MLC) tests were carried out. In addition to flammability tests, thermogra...
Nanocomposites based on blends of polyethylene
Işık, Fatma; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Chemical Engineering (2005)
In this study the effects of compatibilizer type, organoclay type, and the addition order of components on the morphological, thermal, mechanical and flow properties of ternary nanocomposites based on low density polyethylene, LDPE were investigated. As compatibilizer, ethylene/methyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate, ethylene/glycidyl methacrylate, and ethylene/butyl acrylate/maleic anhydride; as organoclay Cloisite? 15A, Cloisite? 25A and Cloisite? 30B were used. All samples were prepared by a co-rotating t...
Nanocomposites based on recycled poly(ethylene terepthalate)
Tolga, Aslı; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Chemical Engineering (2005)
In this study, the effects of glycol type, organoclay type and concentration on the final properties of nanocomposites based on recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) was investigated. For this purpose, first recycled PET was glycolysed and after that unsaturated polyester-montmorillonite nanocomposites were synthesized by using three different types of glycols (i.e. ethylene glycol (EG), propylene glycol (PG) and diethylene glycol (DEG)). As the first step, all the compositions were prepared by Cloisite 30B...
Mechanical properties of plasma surface-modified calcium carbonate-polypropylene composites
Akovali, G; Akman, MA (Wiley, 1997-02-01)
Calcium carbonate was surface-modified by plasma-polymerized acetylene and the effect of surface modification on the mechanical properties of calcium carbonate-polypropylene composites was investigated. Two different plasma polymerization conditions were selected and applied. Chemical structures of plasma-polymerized acetylene products were identified. Mechanical and thermal properties of the composites prepared were evaluated and the effects of surface modification on the extent of adhesion of filler to th...
Synthesis and characterization of polystyrene clay nanocomposites
Özden, Gülsüm; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Chemical Engineering (2004)
This study was undertaken to prepare polystyrene (PS)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites by different methods, including melt intercalation, in-situ polymerization and masterbatch methods. The in-situ polymerization method consisted of dispersing the styrene monomer into the galleries of MMT followed by subsequent polymerization. The PS/MMT nanocomposites formed by melt intercalation method were prepared on a twin-screw extruder. The masterbatch method was in fact a two-step process. As the first step, a ...
