Kaya, Devrim
This thesis tries to distinguish kitsch and art with the help of philosophical hermeneutics by reading it in the light of Derrida̕s interpretation of Hamlet in Specters of Marx. It defines kitsch as experience in order to go beyond both of the two main approaches, namely, the one that sees kitsch as an object and the one that reduces it to the behaviour of the subject. It tries to show that kitsch is not just an aesthetic problem, but also, a political one.

Ousia and tragedy an ontological approach to Aristotle's Poetics
Aytemiz, Volkan; İnam, Ahmet; Department of Philosophy (2004)
The main idea of this thesis is to suggest a new type of reading on Aristotle's Poetics. Commentators of Poetics tried to relate it to Aristotle's ethical treatises. However, in this research, it will be argued that Poetics should be read under the light of Metaphysics. The interpretation proposed here is based on Aristotle's understanding of ousia (substance). The ontological status of artifacts in Aristotle's philosophy will be examined while inquiring the relationships between Poetics and Metaphysics. Co...
A different approach to evolutionary ethics: from biology to society
Aydın, Aysun; Sol, Ayhan; Department of Philosophy (2008)
In this thesis I analyze the evolutionary ethics and propose a new perspective that develops on the notion of altruism. The view of evolutionary ethics, especially the sociobiological account, has some problems. The most important philosophical problem is the “is-ought” problem which refers to the question as to whether moral propositions can be inferred from factual statements. In order to overcome this problem I suggest a different reading of the notion of altruism namely “altruistic behavior practice” th...
Adorno’s conception of autonomous art in light of Kant’s and Hegel’s philosophies
İnceefe, İlay; Parkan, Barış; Department of Philosophy (2018)
In this thesis I tried to to analyze Adorno’s conception of autonomous art through his conception of “truth content”. Within the aesthetic debates in the Frankfurt School, Adorno uses the conception of “autonomy in art/autonomous work of art” as opposed to “politically committed art”, which is defended by Benjamin and Brecht. However, while his understanding of autonomous work of art seems to defend the elitist understanding of art, this study aims to show that Adorno’s conception of “autonomy” or “truth co...
An Inquiry into the nature of aesthetic theory in its relation to theory of knowledge in Kant’s critical philosophy
Özdoyran, Güven; İnam, Ahmet; Department of Philosophy (2013)
The main concern of the dissertation is to investigate Kant’s aesthetic theory and its problematic relation to theory of knowledge in his transcendental philosophy. In the Critique of Judgment, Kant constructs his aesthetic theory by arguing that the aesthetic experience is based on a certain type of feeling, namely, the feeling of pleasure, rather than a concept. He grounds such a feeling on the aesthetic judgment of reflection. In spite of its non-conceptual and subjective characteristic, an aesthetic ref...
