The primary objective of this study was to investigate the reading difficulties (problems) of Freshman EFL students attending the Department of Foreign Language Education at Middle East Technical University. The study attempted to integrate notions of strategic, linguistic, discourse and sociolinguistic competence into the construct of reading: a first approximation at integrating and applying a model of reading ability to a model of communicative language ability. To examine the reading difficulties and factors related to EFL reading, the researcher investigated the sub-competencies of reading comprehension in the following areas of Communicative Competence: linguistic, strategic, socio-linguistic and discourse competence. For this purpose, 6 reading quizzes were administered to 29 EFL readers and the results were analyzed by three different reading instructors to explore, from a Communicative Competence perspective, where the difficulties in L2 reading were experienced. The results showed that students̕ difficulties frequently originated from discourse competence, followed by sociolinguistic, strategic and linguistic competences, respectively.

An interactive approach for multi-criteria sorting problems
Keser, Burak; Köksalan, Murat; Department of Industrial Engineering (2005)
This study is concerned with a sorting problem; the placement of alternatives into preference classes in the existence of multiple criteria. An interactive model is developed to address the problem, assuming that the decision maker has an underlying utility function which is linear. A recent methodology, Even-Swaps, which is based on value tradeoff is utilized in the model for both making an estimation of the underlying utility function and generating possible dominance among the alternatives on which it is...
The Effects of direct and integrated instruction of cognitive and metacognitive and reading strategies at awareness-raising level on reading proficiency and strategy use
Çiçekoğlu, Deniz; Daloğlu, Ayşegül; Department of English Language Education (2003)
This study intends to find out the possible effects of cognitive and metacognitive reading strategy instruction at awareness-raising level on reading proficiency and strategy use. In the study both qualitative and quantitative data were utilized. The relevant data were obtained by means of think-aloud protocols, semi-structured interviews, the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning اSILL- (Oxford, 1990), learning diaries and the reading scores of students on a proficiency exam (COPE). A total of 24 studen...
A question-answer system for mobile devices in lecture-based instruction: a qualitative analysis of student engagement and learning
Ataş, Amine Hatun; Delialioğlu, Ömer (2018-01-01)
The aim of this study was to explore the opinions, perceptions and evaluations of students about their experiences with a question-answer system used on mobile devices in a lecture-based course. Basic qualitative research method was employed in this study to understand how students made sense of their experiences during the instruction. The participants of the study were 25 of 42 students enrolled in a Computer Hardware course, who were interviewed in five sessions of focus-groups. Data analysis was done ba...
Performance tests of a novel electroencephalographic data-acquisition system
Usakli, Ali Bulent; Gençer, Nevzat Güneri (2007-02-16)
The aim of the this study is to present some performance tests of a novel 256-channel electroencephalographic data-acquisition system. The common mode rejection ratio of the system was measured as 102 dB for signals in the electroencephalography frequency range and 154 dB for de signals. System electrical noise (referred-to-input) is 1.76 mu V (rms) (0.21 mu V/root Hz for 70-Hz bandwidth). The cross-talk rejection was found to be at 58 dB. The dynamic range of the system was found 108 dB. The performance te...
The Use of transitions, frame markers and code glosses in Turkish EFL learners’ opinion paragraphs
Sancak, Diğdem; Gracanın Yüksek, Martına; Department of English Language Teaching (2019)
The aim of this study is threefold: (i) to identify the types, frequencies and functions of the interactive metadiscourse devices such as transitions, frame markers and code glosses employed by Turkish learners of English in their English opinion paragraphs; (ii) to discover the reasons for the employment and avoidance of those markers by the Turkish EFL writers; (iii) to uncover the effect of teaching materials on the use of the scrutinized interactive metadiscourse markers. To fulfill these aims, data fro...
