Excavators are used for many purposes. Some of these are digging, drilling, breaking and demolition. A demolition excavator boom consists of 3-piece boom which is different in form and construction from a 2-piece boom used in standard excavator. The aim of this thesis is to design a demolition boom for hydraulic excavator with operation weight of 30 ton. With this construction a higher reach is gained. Design of the demolition boom consists of three stages. Firstly the mechanism design is performed to determine the basic link dimensions. In the second step the structural shape of the boom is estimated to perform static stress analysis. The EXCEL program is chosen due to the ease of repetative calculations and applying the changes in structure parameters. The demolition boom is modeled by PRO-ENGINEER, and consequently the model is analyzed by using a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in MSC.Marc-Mentat. According to the FEA results the model is revised.

Utilization of CFD tools in the design process of a Francis turbine
Okyay, Gizem; Aydın, İsmail; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Francis type turbines are commonly used in hydropower generation. Main components of the turbine are spiral case, stay vanes, guide vanes, turbine runner and the draft tube. The dimensions of these parts are dependent mainly on the design discharge, head and the speed of the rotor of the generators. In this study, a methodology is developed for parametric optimization by incorporating Matlab codes developed and commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes into the design process. The design process s...
Design and construction of boundary lubricated bearing test rig and wear analysis in earthmoving machinery
Tekin, Koray Serdar; Akkök, Metin; Söylemez, Eres; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
Excavators which used as earthmoving machinery are exposed to heavy loads and operate long hours repeatedly. The forces that are transmitted trough pin bearings are observed to cause failure due to wear. Therefore, durability of bearings is crucial for excavators. The aim of this study is to perform wear analysis of excavator bearings running in boundary lubrication regime. A hydraulically powered test rig, which simulates the operating conditions of excavator bearings is designed and constructed. Wear is o...
Prediction of downpull on high head gates using computational fluid dynamics
Uysal, Mehmet Akış; Köken, Mete; Aydın, İsmail; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
For design purposes it is important to predict the downpull forces on the tunnel gates installed in the intake of a hydropower plant. In this study downpull forces on the gates are evaluated for different closure rates and for different gate lip geometries using computational fluid dynamics and the results are compared to an existing experimental study. Commercial ANSYS FLUENT software is used in the calculations. It is found that downpull coefficients obtained from computational study showed good agreement...
Design and evaluation of a helicopter main rotor electrohydraulic control system
Düzağaç, Hasan Ali; Çalışkan, Hakan; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2022-8-26)
Helicopters are widely used aircrafts for several purposes. Main Rotor of a Helicopter creates necessary flight forces for performing flight operation. Orientation of a Helicopter Rotor System is determined and controlled manually by pilot and automatically by automatic control system via hydraulically operated flight control actuators. In this research, a novel electrohydraulically operated helicopter main rotor control system is mathematically designed and developed to improve overall performance of contr...
Hydraulic characteristics of tyrolean weirs having steel racks and circular-perforated entry
Şahiner, Halit; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Tyrolean type water-intake structures are commonly used on mountain rivers to supply water to hydropower stations. The amount of water to be diverted from the main channel is the major concern in these kind of structures and should not be less than the design discharge. In this study a physical model of a Tyrolean type water-intake structure was built at the laboratory and the diverted flow from the main channel through the intake structure having steel racks and perforated plates of different types were me...
