Combination of high strength with light weight which is the prominent property of aluminum alloy forgings has led aluminum forgings used in rapidly expanding range of applications. In this study, to produce a particular 7075 aluminum alloy part, the forging process has been designed and analyzed. The forging process sequence has been designed by using Finite Volume Method. Then, the designed process has been analyzed by using Finite Element Method and the stress, strain and temperature distributions within the dies have been determined. Five different initial temperatures of the billet; 438, 400, 350, 300 and 250 degree Celsius have been considered in the thermo-mechanically coupled simulations. The initial temperatures of the dies have been taken as 200 degree Celsius for all these analyses. Finite volume analysis and finite element analysis results of the preform and finish part have been compared for the initial billet temperature of 400 oC. Close results have been observed by these analyses. The experimental study has been carried out for the range of the initial billet temperatures of 251442 degree Celsius in METU-BILTIR Center Forging Research and Application Laboratory. It has been observed that the numerical and the experimental results are in good agreement and a successful forging process design has been achieved. For the initial die temperature of 200 degree Celsius, to avoid the plastic deformation of the dies and the incipient melting of the workpiece, 350 degree Celsius is determined to be the appropriate initial billet temperature for the forging of the particular part.

Waste Generation in Primary and Secondary Aluminum Sector in Turkey
Küçük, Elif; Danacı, Dilara; Yetiş, Ülkü (null; 2017-06-21)
Aluminum is the most produced and used metal following steel in the world because of its combination of physical properties. Aluminum is produced in two ways; primary aluminum production and secondary aluminum production. The main objectives of this study are to find out waste generation in aluminum industry, to determine waste generation factors(WGFs)and to suggest best available techniquesfor the management of wastes from this activity. Fordetermination of waste g...
Effect of welding parameters on the hot cracking behavior of 7039 aluminum - zinc alloy
Akkuş, Mert; Gürbüz, Rıza; Batıgün, Caner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2010)
7039 aluminum alloys are widely being used in the aerospace, automotive and defense industries in which welding technique is used for their joining. The main problem encountered during the welding of 7039 aluminum alloy is hot cracking. The aim of this study is to understand the effect of welding parameters on the hot cracking behavior of 7039 aluminum alloy by using Modified Varestraint Test (MVT) with Gas Tunsgten Arc Welding (GTAW) technique. During tests, welding speed was selected as varying parameter,...
Analysis of magnesium addition, hydrogen porosity and T6 heat treatment effects on mechanical and microstructural properties of pressure die cast 7075 aluminum alloy
Alat, Ece; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2012)
Aluminum alloys are having more attention due to their high specific stiffness and processing advantages. 7075 aluminum alloy is a wrought composition aluminum alloy in the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu series. Due to the significant addition of these alloying elements, 7075 has higher strength compared to all other aluminum alloys and effective precipitation hardenability characteristic. On the other hand, aluminum alloys have some drawbacks, which hinder the widespread application of them. One of the most commonly encounte...
The effect of B4C reinforcements on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear behavior of AA7075 alloy matrix produced by squeeze casting
Demir, Mehmet Emin; ÇELİK, YAHYA HIŞMAN; KILIÇKAP, EROL; Kalkanlı, Ali (2022-11-01)
Aluminum and its alloys have become the most popular materials in applications aiming to provide lightness due to their low density. However, the low mechanical properties compared to other competitors are among the disadvantages of aluminum and its alloys. This is an important motivation factor in researching strength increasing mechanisms in aluminum and its alloys. In this study, the effects of reinforcement ratio and type on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear behavior of the AA7075/B4C ...
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF REPAIRED CARBON FIBER REINFORCED POLYMER COMPOSITES
Sonat, Emine Evren; Özerinç, Sezer; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2021-12-10)
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are increasingly used in the aerospace industry due to their high specific strength compared to conventional metallic materials. However, a significant shortcoming of these composites is their increased susceptibility to damage. Structural repair is a common method to restore the load-carrying capacity of a damaged part when the damage size exceeds the pre-defined tolerances. Scarf and stepped bonded repair methods are the primary choice for cases that requi...
