A new method for polybenzoxazine synthesis was developed and carried out throughout this work. Bisphenol-A, hexamethylenediamine, and paraformaldehyde were reacted through Mannich condensation reaction forming polybenzoxazine precursors. The reaction was followed by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) as a molecular weight determination method in order to decide the end of reaction. The synthesized product, polybenzoxazine precursors, was polymerized thermally. Polybenzoxazine precursors were also characterized by using spectroscopic methods, 1H-NMR and FTIR, giving an approximation to structural determinations. Thermal characterization of precursors and polybenzoxazine showed that the materials had two exotherms at around 220ºC and 260ºC. The first exothermic peak was an indication of polymerization and preliminary crosslinking reactions while the second peak was due to the final polymerization of polybenzoxazine precursors. These precursors showed no significant structural change in isothermal period of 20 minutes at 200, 220, 225, 235ºC. Mechanical tests were performed on the polybenzoxazine films. The films cured at 180ºC possessed a tensile strength at break 21.04 (±3.56) MPa and an average elongation of 2.7 (±0.93) %. Young’s modulus was calculated as 0.93 (±0.05) GPa for polybenzoxazine films.

Tirkeş, Seha; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
New compounds consisting of 3-thienyl and aniline units linked by polyether bridges have been synthesized and their electrochemical polymerization was performed via constant potential electrolysis and cyclic voltammetry. In the case of 3-thienyl derivatives two compounds, 1,12-di-3-thienyl-2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecane (MI) and 1,15-di-3-thienyl-2,5,8,11,14-pentaoxapentadecane (MII) were synthesized utilizing literature methods and their corresponding polymers, poly(I) and poly(II) were prepared in an electroly...
Synthesis and characterization of polypyrrole nanoparticles and their nanocomposites with polypropylene
Baytekin, Sevil; Küçükyavuz, Zuhal; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
Conducting polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles were synthesized via microemulsion polymerization system. The characterization of PPy nanoparticles was done by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Nanocomposites were prepared by melt-mixing of polypyrrole with polypropylene (PP) and processed with injection molding. The amount of PPy in nanocomposites varied in the range of 1-20% by weight. The effect of PPy nanoparticles on mechanical, electrical properties and ...
Synthesis of block conducting copolmers of cholesteryl functionalized thiophene and their use in the immobilization of cholesterol oxidase
Çırpan, Ali; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2004)
Synthesis and characterization of conducting copolymers were achieved by using thiophene-3-yl acetic acid cholesteryl ester (CM) and poly (3-methylthienyl methacrylate) (PMTM). A new polythiophene containing a cholesteryl side chain in the b- position was chemically polymerized in nitromethane/carbon tetrachloride using FeCl3 as the oxidizing agent. Polymerization was also achieved by constant current electrolysis in dichloromethane. Subsequently, conducting copolymers of thiophene-3-yl acetic acid choleste...
Synthesis and characterization of polythiophene/montmorillonite and polythiophene/polypropylene composites
Dülgerbaki, Çiğdem; Küçükyavuz, Zuhal; Department of Chemistry (2006)
In this study, polythiophene(PTP)/montmorillonite(MMT) nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ intercalative polymerization and chemical oxidative polymerization. In in situ intercalative polymerization method, composites containing 90 and 95% MMT were prepared. In chemical oxidative polymerization method, a series of composites ranging from 1 to 15% by weight MMT were synthesized. Thermal and morphological properties of samples were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Thermal Gravim...
Synthesis and characterization of copolymers of diisocyanates and dialcohol
Keskin, Selda; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
This study was aimed to synthesize low molecular weight hydroxyl terminated polyurethane acrylate polymers that can be used in biomedical applications. Acrylate end capping via inter-esterification reaction was successfully achieved with the methacryloyl chloride addition to the hydroxyl ends of the polyurethane at low temperatures. Isocyanate terminated polyurethane acrylates were also synthesized for the sake of comparison. TDI, HDI and MDI were used as diisocyanates for urethane synthesis and they were e...
